Pink Flame Retardant
As the wildfires continue to rage on in Los Angeles, California, firefighters are turning to a pink flame retardant and information worth sharing. There were several articles that discuss the wildfires and the pink flame retardant. I am providing a subset of the information contained in those articles that I think people will find useful.
An interesting and worthwhile read…and even more interesting to see if campaign contributions positively influenced their state environmental health and safety inspections and OSHA inspections…and therefore enforcement of preventative maintenance requirements which can be expensive to the company running the facilities and equipment. Addressing those health and safety and preventative maintenance costs by the responsible party…which is the company making money from the equipment and labor. If it is shown their lack of conducting required inspections or all that goes with it…then the company should be held responsible and accountable.
This article states the flame retardant is a product called Phos-Chek, which is sold by a company called Perimeter. The article further states the flame retardant has been used by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection since 1963. The article further references a 2022 report in the Associated Press that stated the flame retardant is the most-used fire retardant in the world.
This article states “Aerial fire suppressants are generally a mixture of water, ammonium phosphate — essentially fertilizer — and iron oxide, which is added to make the retardant visible, said Daniel McCurry, a civil and environmental engineering professor at the University of Southern California.”
Ammonium phosphate is a common compound used in fertilizers for farm land and can be purchased in bulk quantities from farm stores and other agricultural and industrial suppliers.
Please note, ammonium phosphate should not be confused with ammonium nitrate which is an oxidizer. Ammonium nitrate is also a commonly used compound used in fertilizers for farm land and can be purchased in bulk quantities from farm stores and other agricultural and industrial suppliers.
Ammonium nitrate was one of the main chemical compounds that was used in the Oklahoma City bombing in the United States in 1995.
