The power of reframing to rediscover your mojo

The power of reframing to rediscover your mojo

“I’M BACK”

O.K. so my ‘I’ is not quite as big as a certain US basketball player, but it’s important to me.

I’ve shared before that the start of 2022 has been challenging. After a record 2021, my first quarter sales were poor.

I didn’t understand why.

The hardest part of working for yourself is that you are often selling ‘YOU’. And when the sales don’t happen, it’s natural to take that as personal rejection.

It’s rarely true - and at a rational level, you know it. But it’s easy to lose confidence in your offering and start to second-guess everything.

Time to Reframe

After a period of introspection, feeling sorry for myself and generally being off my game, I formulated a plan.

Clearly the world has changed (FFS I teach this all the time!). I needed to find out what that meant for my market.

I reached out to peers (note to self - do this more! - ‘No Man is an Island’, right?). Turns out I was not alone. Many of my fellow thought leaders, mentors and leadership experts were experiencing the same thing. It seems the Covid hangover is worse than the Covid cure, with many people struggling with stress, covid, returning to work et al.

I concluded that my market has shifted. My clients were struggling to find the time and headspace to invest in their professional growth. I needed to reframe my approach to meet their new needs.

The cause of my self-doubt was that I did not understand why what I was doing so successfully in 2021 was no longer connecting.

Now I do.

I have a new clarity.

I am able to reframe my situation to understand that:

  • I am at the beginning of a new growth curve
  • I need to work out how to meet the needs of my market as they show up now (not then)
  • The need for what I help people to do has never been greater
  • My opportunity is MASSIVE
  • It will take time - so I need to adjust my expectations

On the other side of this (painful and humbling) process, I have renewed confidence and an excitement I have not felt for a long time.

How Reframing can help you

If you feel stuck, frustrated, or like you are just going through the motions, ‘Reframing’ the way you see your situation is a powerful tool.

Nothing changes - except the way you see your situation. And that changes EVERYTHING.

Most of us are coming to terms with the new, post-pandemic world. It is likely that you will need to change your game - perhaps significantly.

Maybe you will need to master new technology, make physical/remote work ‘work’ better or navigate some other form of significant change.

Your natural response to these changes can often be negative - showing up as anger, regret, envy, fear and resentment.

Reframing the sense of where you are on your greater career and life ‘path’, makes it easier to adjust your expectations.

Rather than fearing you are at the end of a great career chapter, you can shift perspectives to see that you are actually at the beginning of a new one.

And it could be your best ever!

In turn, the actions and investments you need to make to set yourself up for success become more obvious.

You have new direction, new energy and new momentum.

YOU ARE BACK!
