Pimp your github profile

Howdy ho !

This article might help giving you an edge when getting hired as a softwar dev. It is about low-investment / low maintainance / high return for personal promotion via github landing pages.

Lets be honest, job application process sucks. A lot of reasons I dont need to cover here. As a dev you expected to invest your free time to build "demo" projects that you've might already built before. You might be learning a thing or two, but you literally exchanging your prime time. Time that you can put for the projects you care and develop in the long run. Not another figma / api wiring task.

Why tho

As a dev, if I am looking for another teammate, I am responsible for judging other person's skills. The problem is that, it is not like everyday you will be in a meeting that could define your future... Stakes are high and heart rate is through the roof. You might forget a thing or two, you might get excited. Not ideal.

After the meeting we have a de-briefing with my collegue about what we think. This is where I want to focus on. You are literally bound to 2 or more people's decision based on an 2+ hours of meetings. This is the bottle neck for most people. Very seldom we got rejected by HR but more with technical skills. Also being objective is something humans cannot achieve easily. What if I (as an interviewer) have good feelings about you even before I join the interview ? That would definetely shape my opinions at the end.

How ?

Not all of us built a demoable SaSS product that we can show to companies and get hired on the spot. But for sure we all built all these demo projects more than 5 times. Why not show these projects and even things we are currently doing in our github pages ? I believe this will target the bottle neck for most devs. I am also very lazy to build a website for myself. So, github pages for the rescue

  1. Copy my readme from https://github.com/mmehmetAliIzci
  2. Open your favorite GPT, with the prompt: I want you to help me change a template that is generic for someone else and put all my relevant information including my email, linkedin, make sure to read throgh my cv and change all the relevant information. If necessary, find icons from internet about the technologies I am using just like in the template. Make sure to replace ``` with $$$ and put it on markdown code block.
  3. Create a repo in github specifically with your name and paste the result.

Mine looks like this:

There are tons of other templates out there. Go wild.
