Pilot Dogs Goes Global !
In January 2024, Steve Hoyt, Pilot Dogs Director of Orientation and Mobility, was asked to volunteer his expertise in Liberia Africa. This opportunity arose through a connection with Mike Smith, a former student of his at Pilot Dogs, who is associated with the Psalm 82:3 Mission, non-profit ministry developing a safe children’s village and self-sustainable community center in Liberia, Africa.
Orientation and Mobility (O&M) is a specialized skill taught by Pilot Dogs to help individuals who are blind or visually impaired navigate their world with confidence and independence. O&M training covers a wide range of skills, including cane techniques, spatial awareness, obstacle detection, and travel skills. Through O&M, individuals learn to travel safely and efficiently, both indoors and outdoors.
Liberia faces a significant eye health crisis, with approximately 9.5% of the population, or around 480,000 people, visually impaired. With limited access to eye care professionals and a high prevalence of conditions like cataract, glaucoma, and river blindness, many individuals in Liberia struggle with vision loss.

During this mission, Steve focused on providing orientation and mobility training to 60 blind individuals at four different schools in Monrovia. Prior to this training, these individuals had never had access to white canes and relied on sticks and their own hands to navigate their environment.
Steve will be returning to Liberia in January 2025 to continue his training and support the ongoing efforts with his students in Liberia. Your generous donations have made a significant impact on the lives of these individuals.
P.S. A heartfelt thank you to all our supporters. Your generosity makes a world of difference.
With gratitude- Your Pilot Dogs Team!
