Food Policy and US Candidates: What's on the Menu?

Kamala Harris: Cooking Up Change

Vice President Kamala Harris is leveraging her love for cooking and restaurants as a campaign asset. From giving turkey-roasting advice to making dosa with Mindy Kaling, Harris has leaned into cooking in a way no other candidate has. Her interest in food issues like hunger and farm labor aligns with her policy goals. Harris advocates for stronger support for farm workers, improved food security measures, and policies that promote healthy eating. Her personal connection to cooking serves as both a political tool and a means of relaxation, showcasing her ability to balance the demands of a high-pressure campaign with a down-to-earth approach. Earth and food need action approach now. Let's see how much this bubbles toward a priority lane.

Donald Trump: Fast Food and Food Deregulation

No, we are not talking about his recent viral Chick-fil-a date follow-up in Atlanta, Former President Donald Trump's food policy is characterized by a more laissez-faire approach. Trump, known for his love of fast food, emphasizes deregulation in the food industry. His administration focused on rolling back regulations that were seen as burdensome to food producers and businesses. Trump's food policy includes supporting large-scale agricultural production, reducing environmental regulations, and promoting food industry growth through tax cuts and incentives. His stance is centered on economic growth and maintaining a strong, competitive food industry despite a growing nutrition pandemic.

Trump's Mass Deportation Plan: A Threat to Farming Labor

In recent Policy highlights, Trump's mass deportation plan could drastically impact the U.S. agricultural sector, potentially cutting the labor force by half and severely affecting the dairy industry. If you pair that with growing AI threats of nearly 800 million jobs by 2030, the workforce is up for quite a battle. At nearly 45 percent of U.S. farmworkers are undocumented immigrants, Trump's policy would deport all unauthorized migrants, creating a significant labor shortage. Experts warn this could undermine the global competitiveness of U.S. agriculture. For instance, immigrant workers account for 51 percent of dairy labor and produce 79 percent of the nation's milk supply. States like Wisconsin and California could see major disruptions, but maybe black jobs will come back to those States ????-- or we'll find our way virtual reality farming and awaiting drone veggies. More updates on that to come...
