The Science Pie
A few wonky stories from the sky are pushing us closer to floating farms. Despite food systems contributing to about one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, only 3 percent of climate finance is directed toward them, highlighting a significant funding gap, according to the Global Alliance. The Alliance has united foundations to leverage resources and networks for more regenerative and equitable food and agriculture systems. With so much money being poured into companies like Blue Origin and SpaceX , it may be of advantage to incorporate more aerospace into food innovation funding pitches.
Back here on the ground, we think it would be a great startup idea to have public discourse management on academic journals connected back to social media accounts. See how a recent food science journal retracted 10 papers based on peer relationships.

Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico have implemented "tobacco-style" warning labels on ultra-processed foods (UPFs), a move inspired by Dr. Carlos Monteiro's NOVA classification system, which categorizes foods based on their level of processing. Dr. Monteiro, who developed this system, advocates for warning labels and public health campaigns to inform consumers about the dangers of UPFs, which include additives like high-fructose corn syrup. He warns that the increasing dominance of UPFs in global diets is linked to a rise in chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes, displacing healthier, less processed foods and deteriorating overall diet quality.
The Line
Food prices are going to keep us sick - literally. The meme-worthy sentiment of America's persistent inflation went viral as a TikTok by a man named Sewerlidd shared a shocking discovery of habit. While browsing through his Walmart account, he stumbled upon an option to reorder a previous grocery haul. To his shock, the order of 45 essential items that cost $127 in 2022 now totals an astonishing $414. This nearly fourfold increase leaves consumers like Sewerlidd feeling physically ill, as they confront the drastic rise in everyday expenses. It's a sobering reminder of the ongoing economic strain many are facing, despite Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen's recent dismissal of 'sticker shock.' Videos like these continue to hit the consumer chord as travelers and everyday grocery shoppers reject prices as just inflation. Companies that show more innovation and new product offerings can combat the lessened appeal with newfound distractions and aisle excitement.
