Along with the development of quantum computing technology, the focuses on quantum computing have been extended from academia to industry. The United States leads the world in the number of quantum start-ups, followed by Canada, China and Japan (Note 1). More and more countries and regions are joining the group to initiate quantum computing programs in order to build up a quantum talent pool. Ever since 2015, quantum computing has made landmark progresses with increasing patents in quantum area.

IPRdaily, a leading global intellectual property technology media, conducted a statistical analysis of the globally public patent application data available up to 18th, October 2022 in the field of quantum computing from IncoPat Database, a global patent database provider and ranked the top 100 companies with the most patents (Note 2, Figure 1). Results showed that the 100 companies came from 18 countries and regions, 40% of which are from the US, followed by 15% from China, 11% from Japan, 7% from Canada, 6% from UK, 4% from Australia, 3% from German, 2% from Swiss, Israel, and Finland respectively, and 1% from Austria, Ireland, Spain, Korea, France, Sweden, Poland, and Malta respectively (Figure 2).?

Among the companies listed, IBM ranked the first with an outstanding 1323 patents, Google the second with 762, and D-Wave the third with 501 (Figure 1).?

According to IPRdaily, the data analyzed included patents in the field of quantum computing processing system and method, quantum circuit operation method and device, quantum state tomography method and device, quantum program conversion method and device, quantum logic gate operation optimization method, superconducting quantum processors and quantum control and measurement technology, and other technical fields, while those in the field such as that of quantum key cryptography and quantum-resistant cryptography were not included.

Analyzing from the perspective of the origin of country or region, the patents in quantum technology were also mainly applied for or held by companies from the US, China, Japan and Canada. Among them, 54.18% of the patented technologies originated from the US, outranking the other countries or regions; 16.68% of them were from China, followed by 7.94% from Japan and 7.04% from Canada (Figure 3).

It can be also noted that SpinQ Technology (Note 3) ranked the 58th on the Top 100 Companies with Most Patents and the 8th in China (Figure 1). However, we are endeavoring to be patented with more technologies with more experts joining our team and research input. We have developed and produced a series of commercial desktop NMR quantum computers including Gemini, Triangulum and Gemini Mini, which are the best sellers in China and abroad. Apart from our NMR quantum computers, we developed our own quantum programming framework SpinQKit, cloud platform Tauras, and the prototype of superconducting quantum computer. All together provide one-stop solutions from hardware and software to applications. Moving forward, we will continuously upgrade our existing products and develop new solutions to provide our users with full-stack services that is stable, easy to use and highly applicable by means of controllable and integrated research and development. We are ambitious to play a role to bring quantum computing to life.?
