Picture These Thoughts …
          SARAH APPLEBY COREY
“This picture of Sarah Appleby Corey preparing biscuits for baking in Peconic in her kitchen, circa 1900, seems to typify Southold Town women in the 19th century.” wrote town historian Antonia Booth.

Picture These Thoughts … SARAH APPLEBY COREY

By Dan McCarthy

"THERE'S MORE THAN "TWO ON THE AISLE!"

I JUST LEARNED SOMETHINGEXTRA” TO SHARE!

Former Southold Town Historian Antonia Booth was able to arrange for photos regarding so much Southold Town-related history and they were placed throughout the aisles along Southold Town Hall.

I went ahead and took down the topics & persons’ names that are featured in those photographs that perhaps have truly not had so much available research having been exchanged about those particular photographs.

I, myself, have written regarding information about many of those photographs; i.e.: EZRA L’HOMMEDIEU:

https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/its-just-all-name-because-southold-nys-true-treasure-ezra-mccarthy/

HERE IS THE LIST I’VE MADE UP OF THE PHOTOGRAPGHS THAT I HAVE NOT PREVIOUSLY WRITTEN ABOUT & POSSIBLY COULD ASSIST IN OFFERING ASSISTANCE TO BENEFIT CITIZENS LEARNING ABOUT THEM TOO, ESPECIALLY IF THEY HAVE NOT BEEN AWARE OF THEM BEFORE {!!!}:

BICYCLES – {GERALD HOBSON IS FEATURED IN PHOTOS AT SOUTHOLD TOWN HALL BEING LINKED WITH THE SOUTHOLD ROTARY. SO I THOUGHT TO WRITE ABOUT BOTH GERALD HOBSON & SOUTHOLD ROTARY INDIVIDUALLY. – BAY HOUSE {ORIENT SUMMER COTTAGE} – GREENPORT MASONIC & ODD FELLOWS LODGES WHICH RECEIVED CHARTERS IN 1854 – ONE TO BE PERSONALLY WRITTEN-UP BY ME HAS, THREE WOMEN FEATURED IN TRULY COUNTRY FASHION AND THEIR NAMES ARE: KATHERINE WILLIAMS, ANNE CARPENTER & MARY HORTON. PLUS A PHOTO REGARDING THE CUTCHOGUE OLD WOODEN BRIDGE!

Upon quickly catching the photo of Sarah Appleby Corey that is located by the Department of Public Works in the Southold Town Hall building on the Main Road, I just happened to think to “go-write-on-ahead” and do some research.

The caption reads: “SARAH APPLEBY COREY SUMMER KITCHEN ca. 1920.”

NOW OF COURSE WE ARE AWARE OF APPLEBEE’S RESTAURANTS. {“APPLEBEE” IS A VARIATION OF Appleby!}

I WAS SURE TO CHECK SOUTHOLD FREE LIBRARY WHITAKER HISTORICAL COLLECTION!

The Suffolk Times dated March 3, 1994 included an article by Ruth Jernick titled Celebrating Southold’s Women.

March of 1994 was named Women’s History Month.

On page 22 in that March 3, 1994 The Suffolk Times, there is a photo atop-center on that page and in the extreme right-hand column opposite that photo is this:

“WOMEN IN SOUTHOLD-From the collection of antique photos curated by Southold Town historian Antonia Booth: Below a circa photo of Louisa Jefferson, mother of former historian Wayland Jefferson; left-Sarah Appleby Corey preparing biscuits for baking in her Southold kitchen circa 1900.”

ANTONIA BOOTH was featured in the March 25, 2004 The Suffolk Times where she had her article entered with the title: To Southold’s spunky women.

A picture of Sarah Appleby Corey appeared directly in the center below the headline.

Freedom of the Press

The caption below the Sarah Appleby Corey photo read as this:

“This picture of Sarah Appleby Corey preparing biscuits for baking in her Peconic in her kitchen, circa 1900, seems to typify Southold Town women in the 19th century.” wrote town historian Antonia Booth.

I simply took the time to scan the xerox copy of that March 25, 2004 The Suffolk Times article from the Southold Free Library Whitaker Historical Collection and saved the photo image and its accompanying caption in jpg format. – THAT SARAH APPLEBY COREY PHOTO WAS COURTESY OF ANTONIA BOOTH. I MERELY ENTERED BOTH ATOP THIS MY POST!

YOU KNOW WHAT ???

There happens to be “posted” upon one of the aisles {rows} as one gets through Southold Town Hall even another “representation” paying tribute to SARAH APPLEBY COREY. {posted – “so-to-speak” - for an object being placed or like a LINKEDIN.COM entry too!}

    That is a photograph of Charles Glover Corey and Sarah Appleby Corey’s sons at their Peconic farm {that} illustrates the agricultural nature of the area.

ON PAGE SIX IN The Peconic Bay Shopper DECEMBER 2013 EDITION IS THAT SAME EXACT PHOTO. This was included on the right-hand side of that photograph. – JUST FOR THE SAKE OF IT, I adjusted the font size to match this my post about SARAH APPLEBY COREY: (Editor’s note: We have published this photo previously, but it is a favorite so we share it again.) AND YOU KNOW ME BY NOW …

I AM DEFINITELY NOT THAT FAR FROM A MISSING LINK PERSONALLY AS EVERYTHING CONNECTS FOR ME!

You know something folks? … It definitely is all not about me. As an archivist/genealogist, over the years writing about Southold Town, I compiled articles that are online that depict particular “relative information” regarding a majority of the Southold Town Hall aisle{s} photos. I am going to pursue following-up on research from the list of photos that are on-and-around the Southold Town Hall aisle walls about those I have not previously done research on - and share the information “when the time is ‘write!’” on this my Linkedin.com account!
