Picture this... You’re in a second round of interviews, sitting across the table from Jane. Jane is the HR Manager of the local Council on the coast, just where you want to be travelling to each week.

You stare out the window at the passing traffic, wondering if Jane can tell how nervous you are. If only you had known the questions she was about to ask you ahead of time.

Well good news - here’s a hint of what you should expect to be asked in an interview.

  • Who you are. A series of questions about you that you use to define how you might fit in with other staff.
  • Why you want to work for this Council. This is your time to use narrative to explain why you want that specific role in that particular organisation.
  • How you have previously overcome a challenge in the workplace. This helps the employer identify your strengths and weaknesses.
  • Where you see yourself fitting into Council. This is generally determined by a personality type question to see if your values align with the Council’s.

So, next time you are sitting across from a Jane, take a deep breath. Remember that practice makes perfect, but understanding the reasons behind the questions makes it a lot easier to feel confident with your answers.
