Salesforce Data Migration Guide for Admins

The M word… does this fill you with excitement, trepidation, or outright dread? Migration should not be something to fear, but it is something to be taken seriously, as there are plenty of ways to come unstuck when moving to a new system.?

  • Clean your data: Time to connect with your source data and check its format, structure, and completeness.
  • Plan your data load: Next, start to map the data from the source system to Salesforce Objects.
  • Transform your data: Your source system may not have the same data structure as Salesforce – you’ll need to adjust the data so that it’s in a valid structure.
  • Conduct a dry run: Sandbox at the ready!

The Rise of Offshoring in the Salesforce Ecosystem

What’s offshoring all about? No, it’s not a sunny day at sea on board a 50 foot yacht. Rather, this practice refers to the overseas relocation of production or services – not to be confused with outsourcing, which is a similar but distinct practice involving a third-party supplier.?

There are plenty of benefits to be had, including access to a global talent pool, a diverse workforce, scalability and coverage across multiple locations, and reduced labor costs.?

On the flipside (and there is always a flipside), there’s the possibility that offshoring could lead to a lack of onshore job opportunities and investment in onshore training; with purse strings tightening, employers will undoubtedly be tempted by lower costs. And with access to a global workforce, there could also be challenges for teams in terms of assessing levels of expertise and ensuring legal standards and compliance across different regions.

So how will all this impact the Salesforce job market? Time will tell, but with more and more tech companies utilizing this practice, from Google to IBM, it’s a trend that shouldn’t be ignored.

Is Dreamforce Worth the Price Tag??

There’s no point pretending that a Dreamforce ticket is a small purchase. It’s expensive. But is it a case of you get what you pay for?

First, let’s take a quick look at how much it will cost you. There’s your ticket – depending on when you purchase it, you’re looking at around $2K. If you happen to live locally, good for you! However, if you’re traveling to San Fran especially, you'll need to shell out for travel and accommodation – that’s where you’ll see costs really begin to creep up. All in, you could be looking at paying upwards of $5K.??

How about the value? Well, you’ll have front-row seats for any major announcements. Keynotes will be live streamed via Salesforce+, of course, so you don’t need to be there in person to keep up. However, there will be hundreds of hands-on sessions to take in, packed with unique insights – the majority of which are not streamed.?

Networking is another big one, as you’re likely to come into contact with a lot of people across a wide range of Salesforce roles. Swap notes, share lessons, pick brains, and make connections – you’ll find that these conversations continue beyond the conference.?

As with most things in life, you get out what you put in. You’ll want a clear plan of action – decide which sessions you would like to attend and scope out key locations, while also leaving a little wiggle room for the unexpected!?

Did we mention Elton John??

Ways to Make Salesforce List Views Run Faster

Doddery old list views slowing you down? Over time, additional data and filters can cause list views to load slower than they used to.Thankfully, there are a few surefire ways to give much-loved list views a new lease of life:?

  1. Develop an Archival Process: Regularly archive old or unused records to keep your active dataset lean and tidy.?
  2. Control What Records Your Users Can See: Employ the “Principle of Least Privilege” to limit access and maintain the security of your Salesforce org. This will also ensure your users don’t have access to too many records that may affect list view speeds.?
  3. Optimize Your Filters: Specific filters perform far better than broad ones.
  4. Display Only Necessary Fields: Reduce the number of fields and show only the essentials – this minimizes load time and keeps the interface clean and user-friendly.
  5. Train Your Users: Don’t forget to educate your users so that they know how to create and use list views effectively.
  6. Use Reports for Large Data Sets: List views are truncated at 2,000 records, so they may spend extra time querying records that won’t be displayed, whereas reports can handle larger datasets more efficiently.
