Pick Up the Mic: More about Karaoke and LinkedIn?? Content

If you recall, my first LinkedIn newsletter back in January was about how my LinkedIn content strategy is similar to how I approach karaoke. If you missed it, you can read it HERE. Anyway, after the epic karaoke party at last month's Badass Business Summit, I am back with more reflections on the intersection of content and karaoke.
?? Own it! Show up with Confidence.
The key to karaoke is confidence. You don't have to be an amazing singer but you have to perform like you are Beyonce - own it! This isn't American Idol - no one is going to tell you that you're pitchy. Have fun and the room will cheer you on!
The same applies to your content - it won't be perfect but it doesn't have to be. Own your "zone of genius" and share your unique perspective. The more you post, the more your confidence builds and the stronger your community becomes.
?? Pick Something Relatable - Too Niche Might Lose Your Audience
There is a reason why everyone loves karaoke classics like "Summer Lovin", "Dancing Queen" and "Piano Man." They are familiar, accessible and have broad appeal. When you pick a song that is obscure, no matter how great a tune it is, you risk losing your audience's attention.
People want to participate and sing along - important to remember when making a song choice.
When it comes to content, the same rules apply. When you get too niche or use too much inside lingo, you lose the ability to connect to a broader audience. Yes, it's important to speak to your targets, but you can appeal to them by showing how you can break down difficult concepts and engage them with a strong call to action question.
?? Plan Ahead
For some reason, as soon as you need to come up with a karaoke song to choose, your mind goes blank. Maybe it's the pressure or the need to make a decision but this is why I have a list in my Notes app with karaoke tunes. No joke - when a song comes to mind or plays when I am shuffling iTunes, I'll add it so I don't forget.
For months before the Badass Business Summit, I was adding songs to my list to ensure I was prepared for the karaoke party and I kicked it off with the first song on my list - "Faith" by George Michael (pictured here).
Planning is even more essential when it comes to content. No one wants to sit at a blank screen, trying to come up with a creative post. Do yourself a favor and make a simple plan - how many times a week will you post (minimum 1) and what general topics will you talk about? I've talked before about defining your content buckets - use them to make a plan to ensure you deliver when it comes to LinkedIn content.

?? Don't Go It Alone
Karaoke can be very intimidating. Some people need "liquid courage" but others simply need a friend (or a few) to go on stage with them. Who doesn't love belting out a tune together? It doesn't matter if you can sing - you are on stage, having fun and making memories with your community.
Content works with same way - we don't post for ourselves. We share content to engage our audience...better yet, our community. Content is much more fun to create when you think about it as a communal experience. It's a tool to get to know people who can benefit you - personally and professionally - and who you can impact in a positive way.
I hope this inspires you to pic up the mic - literally or figuratively. When you put yourself out there, great things happen.
Special thanks to my karaoke super-fans Pablo Gonzalez ?????? , Deanna Russo , Laine Belcastro , Lauren Ammon and honorable mention to Zack Lemear - I will never forget that performance. And if you want to join in the fun, come to next year's Badass Business Summit, September 2023 in Ft. Worth, TX!
