Pick My Brain #4: REMEMBER SIMBA … REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE

Pick My Brain #4: REMEMBER SIMBA … REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE

Running around without pausing to reflect often leads us to forget the basics. Even worse, sometimes we stand in the shower and lament “why am I even doing this anymore?”

Dry yourself off, put on some underwear and let’s get to the bottom of this together. You’ve lost sight of your purpose because you don’t have a brand strategy. While brand strategies are normally built to underpin a marketing program, they are also essential for reminding you, and everyone else, why you go to work.

One of my hot tips is REMEMBER YOUR STORY

This step is all about you and making a connection with the reason why you either joined the business or started the business.

Remembering why you started your business, or why your business was born, can provide an emotional link to your customers. If the business was started to meet an unmet need, this is a good story about why your product or service is better. For instance, the paint brand Taubmans, was started by George Taubman who was a signwriter. He wanted better quality paint for his outdoor work, so he made paint himself.

DO THIS: Write down what possessed you to start this business?

Perhaps you may have forgotten why the business was started, or the story sounds too boring to you? It’s probably not boring and could provide an emotional foundation for your brand. Write down your story in long hand and don’t read what you’ve written as you write it. Just write.

Now put it away overnight and the next morning read what you’ve written. I’m guessing your reason was not primarily, or only, to make tonnes of cash. We’re all in business to serve a need or want, or to make other people happy. Tonnes of cash comes when we focus on why we’re in business.

Why is this so important

When briefing your team or agency to create a brand strategy for you, this is very important information. It ensures your brand strategy is AUTHENTIC. You will more easily be able to deliver your brand promises if they come naturally to your culture. Brands that fail are those that can’t deliver their promise because they’re faking it.

Nobody likes to go on a first date with someone only to find they look nothing like their profile picture. Even worse is when they say they enjoy reading but then you find they only read the newspaper. Great brands are true to themselves and don’t pretend to be something they’re not.
