The Piano - Music and Leadership
Music in general, and piano repertoire in particular, personify leadership as we have now come to understand it in the 21st?century – an interpersonal encounter that seeks to engage others, and through building relationships, seeks to honor various human experiences and conditions in creating a more understandable, connected and beautiful world.
Susan Tomes' book, The Piano - A History of 100 pieces (2021/22) will likely be of greatest interest to pianists or those who regularly listen to piano music. As it covers the 100 pieces she views as significant over 200 years, she also charts the evolution of ideas across cultures and time. My review lauds Tomes for recognizing the connective and transforming nature of music and identifies the leadership insights that can be drawn from her book as well.
