Physicians are Burning Up and Out

You may not like the AMA* (only 26% of licensed physicians in the US are members), but you cannot deny the numbers.

The most recent study in the national burnout survey series?co-authored by the AMA shows how?the COVID-19 pandemic magnified long-standing issues that have accelerated the U.S. physician burnout rate. At the end of 2021, nearly 63% of physicians reported symptoms of burnout, up from 38% in 2020.?Research shows that large-scale change is needed to address the physician burnout crisis.?

Of course, it is easy to place all the blame on the COVID-19 pandemic.

But it goes much deeper than that.

Demands for documentation to cover legal, regulatory, and billing requirements are constantly increasing, taking precious time away from what physicians do best: take care of patients.

Being a doctor in the 21st century, has become a job more than a profession. Physicians are exploited left and right for their expertise and get paid pennies on the dollar in exchange.

The healthcare field has become so lucrative for third parties, that nowadays

non-physicians own nearly three in five physician practices (58.5%)

Once upon a time, physicians were self-employed and could structure their practice however they chose. Today, physicians have lost control over their lives and livelihoods, and many are depleted and looking for relief. It is high time to Rebirthinate the physician of yore to regain autonomy and control not just over our own lives, but over our profession and healthcare as a whole.

Physicians need coaches in order to make this happen.

But don't just take it from me!

A few years ago, the White Coat Investor published an article on why physicians should hire coaches:

[...] both physician coaches and their clients speak of amazing, life-changing breakthroughs that have solved their burnout, enabled them to reach academic milestones, and helped them to build amazing, profitable businesses. They frequently cite increased motivation, comfort, and confidence. Naturally, a coach doesn't do anything to you or for you. They can only help you do something for yourself. If you are ready to make some real changes, a coach can aid you in that transformation.

I work with physicians and healthcare executives in charge of physicians who are dealing with utter depletion from and frustration about the current healthcare system that no longer supports the well-being of neither doctors nor their patients.

With my new program, Rebirthinating Medical Lives - Starting with Yours, I help my clients embody and ground a new mindset with powerful skills and approaches that shows them how to avoid burn-out and find relief from the depletion that is draining them professionally and personally.

If that’s you or anyone else you know I would love to connect.

Rewind: Free Yourself from Business with Spencer Cox

This episode was first published on March 13, 2024. Did you miss it then?

In this conversation, Spencer Cox shares his journey of curiosity and learning, starting from his childhood and the influence of his engineer father. He discusses the importance of nurturing curiosity in children and how it can shape their mindset as adults.

Spencer also reflects on the balance between learning and doing, and the realization that the more one learns, the more they realize how much they don't know. He shares his experience of embarking on a motorcycle trip from Vancouver to Argentina and how it led him to transition into coaching.

Spencer explains his approach to helping coaches build efficient and successful businesses, focusing on specific offers and strategic thinking. We discuss the pros and cons of being a generalist versus a specialist in coaching and explore the idea that while generalists may not be as skilled in solving specific problems as specialists, they can still provide value by offering more affordable services.

Takeaways

  • Nurturing curiosity in children can lead to a lifelong learning mindset.
  • Balancing learning and doing is essential as adults, but it's important to maintain a beginner's mindset.
  • Meta skills, such as learning how to learn and problem-solving, are foundational for continuous growth.
  • Taking risks and embarking on new experiences can lead to unexpected opportunities and personal growth.
  • Building a successful coaching business requires a specific offer, strategic thinking, and efficient systems. Being a generalist in coaching means accepting that there will always be someone who can solve specific problems better than you.
  • Framing your work as problem-solving can help you create a more focused and impactful coaching practice.
  • Having a process for solving problems allows you to make a broader impact and help more people at scale.
  • Generalists play an important role in coaching by offering more affordable services to clients who may not be able to afford specialists.

Survey

Currently, most coaches charge several thousand dollars per month for their services which can prevent many people from receiving the help they need.

In recent time, many professionals have started to offer subscription models with an up-front retainer fee and then a monthly subscription cost in an effort to lower the cost of entry and improve access for clients.

This survey is trying to figure out if there is a market for this kind of model for coaches.

I would greatly appreciate your input. In exchange, you will have the option to be notified if/when this service becomes available.

Sharing your email address is entirely optional and will NOT be used for any other purpose than to contact you about this program if/when it becomes available. No body likes spam and you are already subscribed to this newsletter here on LinkedIn. ??

And for kids, I found these friendship journals are incredible. They go back to the classic old-school friendship journals I had when I was in elementary school.

Especially in today's age where we are surrounded by technology, these books go back to true human relationships and they make a great keepsake for the future. I still have mine from 3rd grade.

My kids somehow got the idea that Batman was my favorite superhero (he's second, my actual favorite is Frank Castle from The Punisher series but they're took young for that kind of violence).

So naturally, I had to create the dad-logo and put it up on Etsy.
