A?recent report from Lloyd’s Insurance, in association with the University of Cambridge, identified that cyber-attacks causing physical disruption are increasing from 10 attacks in 2013 to 400 in 2020. Although this is a small number of widespread cyber-attacks, the attacks that cause physical disruption can be dangerous.
The report states an increased risk of state-sponsored or geopolitically motivated attacks because of the changing geopolitical environment concerning the conflict in Ukraine, COVID-19 recovery, and the economy and inflation.
The most significant risk is national infrastructure systems, energy management systems, traffic grids, and other utilities. These things are highly vulnerable to cyber-attacks due to their business continuity and national safety status.
The good news is these attacks are challenging and expensive to carry out; therefore, non-state actors would find it difficult. However, there is a risk that criminal groups could inadvertently cause physical disruption through a ransomware-type attack.
