Photoshop: AI Generative Fill

This is Generative Phil, where I try new AI tools to solve one of my real problems and give it a rating between 1 - 10 Evil Robot Overlords (10, of course, being so essential it's a little scary).

The namesake of this newsletter, Adobe's Photoshop has a built-in AI feature that allows you to select portions of a picture and use text to edit it.

So let's get started.

PROBLEM

I have loads of pictures that require some edits that are far beyond my technical capabilities, so this could be an elegant solution.

I'll start with a simple headshot of me and see if I can smooth out my wrinkled shirt and add a more interesting background.

PROCESS & RESULTS

I'll start with the easy one. Using the wand tool to select the background was a breeze. I'd love for this to look like it was taken in a fancy office with a camera that gently blurs the background, like I'm a high-powered lawyer.

I chose the prompt: 'A slightly blurry inside of an office of a high-powered lawyer'

The three results it gave me were all fantastic:

Now let's try to take the wrinkles out of the shirt. Again, using the Wand tool I selected the white shirt and prompted the following: 'remove wrinkles from the shirt'.

The result:

Most of the wrinkles were removed! It warped some of the buttons and messed up the collar a bit, but I think it was an improvement.

RATING

After another few hours of adding pictures and prompting, I've found Photoshop's Generative Fill to be the most accurate text-to-image I've seen in the AI universe.

And knowing Adobe, it's only going to get more accurate in no time.

I've actually now gotten to the point where instead of using Dall-E 3 or Midjourney, I find a reference image from a free stock photography site and use Photoshop to get my desired image.

For the first time in the history of the newsletter, I'm giving Adobe Photoshop's Generative Fill a perfect 10 Evil Robot Overlords.
