Photography on Safari

Photography on Safari

The incredible and colorful wildlife you’ll see on safari just calls out to be photographed. The drama of the natural world playing out so close to you is something most haven’t experienced. You’ll want to save these moments.

What better way than through photography to memorialize these fantastic and often, life-changing experiences. And then share them with family and friends. It’s the perfect way to re-live your safari.

Luckily, Kenya’s wonderful parks and wildlife are a vast canvas to be photographed again and again. The groupings of animals are constantly changing as is the light giving you infinite opportunities to capture stunning images while enhancing the fun of your safari adventure.

The Most Photographic Parks in the World

We offer multi-day safaris to all of Kenya’s parks and within them, there’s no limit to the wildlife action you’ll see. Our 5 – 8 day safari packages include northern Kenya parks like the cool green rainforests of Aberdare where you’ll stay in a raised platform hotel, looking upon and photographing antelope, buffalo, baboon, and rhino as they emerge from the thick forest.

To the south, we’ll travel to Amboseli National?Park – with its many free-ranging elephants parading before the snow-capped backdrop of Mt. Kilimanjaro. It’s a photographer’s dream location. Moving on to the great Masai Mara, Kenya’s most popular park, safari-goers, and photographers the world over come to see and “capture” the many prides of lions and especially the Great Wildebeest Migration – an explosive spectacle of thousands of animals pouring over the Mara River.

Capture the Colors

In contrast to the golds of the savannah, witness (and photograph) the myriad colors of Lakes Nakuru and Naivasha Parks, with their panoramas of birdlife – kingfishers, herons, egrets, and especially bright, pink flamingos.

The rainbow colors of the birdlife stand out against the blues of the lakes and the deep green foliage of the surrounding parks.

On this 5 – 8 day safari tour, you’ll have chances to meet with the aboriginal people of this land – the Samburu at Samburu National Park, and the Maasai people at either Amboseli or the Masai Mara. Come to their villages, which are islands of color set off by the bright shukkas they wear and their displays of dazzling beaded jewelry.

There’s no limit to the photographic possibilities as these native people show you their homes, their customs, and perform traditional dances.

And Now Some Tips

Finally, here are a couple of key pointers to get the most out of your photographic safari. You’ll be shooting a lot on your safari so bring plenty of memory cards and don’t forget to back your photos! A long telephoto lens is essential to get close images of those lions and flamingoes. We suggest at least a 400 mm or a zoom lens that covers that range.

The sunsets on safari can be spectacular; you can’t miss those but keep shooting after the sun goes down. Use a tripod and a long time exposure to capture the bright eyes peering out at you in the dark.

There’s no lack of photographic opportunities while on safari but don’t forget to put the camera down and just enjoy the rich natural world before you. Sometimes our memories are the best way to record the moment.
