Photography Explained – Episode 9 – How Can I Learn To Use My New Camera?
Rick McEvoy
Architectural and construction photography. Creator of the Photography Explained podcast. Photography blog. Photography educator and all round good egg!
Ok in this episode of my podcast I am talking about learning how to use a camera.
To get the best out of a camera you need to learn how to use it properly. That means reading the manual, trying all the diffferent settings, practising, practising, practising. Try out the many things that your camera can do and see what results you get with the photos you take. And learn from what you see.
Take time to learn how to use your camera properly and you will be rewarded - trust me.
Episode 9 of the Photography Explained Podcast
"Hi everybody. Welcome to Episode 9 of the Photography Explained podcast. In this episode – How can I learn to use my new camera?
I’m your host Rick and each week I will try to explain one photographic thing to you in plain English in less than 10 minutes without the irrelevant details. My aim is to explain things in just enough detail to help us with our photography and no more."
I will expand on these headings briefly.
How can I learn to use my new camera?
Slowly and properly
This is not a 5 minute job. This needs time and care - you need to go through your camea manual from start to end, trying out all the things that you find and setting the camera up for you.
Mistakes I have made
I will get onto these but the biggest mistake I ever made was buying a camera and using it without learning how ti use it properly and being disappointed and frustrated.
Read the manual
I did this with my Canon 6D and it was a revelation - it really was. It turns out my camera was doing things I did not want it to do.
On with my Olympus EM5 Mk 2 I found things that i never would have known about!
Familiarise yourself with the camera
Practise, practise, practise
Explore all the settings
Go through the manual and do the things it shows you. Actually do them!
Buy a book
I bought three books and did not read any of them properly. And then with my Canon 6D I bought one book and went through it from start to finish with my camera in hand. And I also did this with the Olym pus EM5 Mk 2.
Read the book
Yes actually read it!
Work through the book
From start to finish
Try all the settings
You might be surprised what you find - these things are very cleaver these days!
Practise
Practise, practise, practise. The number 1 way to improve your photography.
Check your photos
You need to do this - learn from the photos you have taken. See what works, what does not work, and adjust as needed.
Enjoy your camera
Cameras are a joy to use - learn how to use your camera properly and you will enjoy taking photos much more I promise you!
And do not worry about other accessories
Just the bascis and no more until you know how to use your camera inside out.
When I say basics I mean a tripod and nothing more.
The end point
Learn your camera until you are able to use it and change any settings with your eyes closed.
Remember – this is all about taking better photos – nothing else matters!
That’s that one done.
