Photogrammetry made easy!

Photogrammetry made easy!

Hey guys, in this tutorial I'm gonna show you how to create a 3D object from a series of photos using Adobe 3D Sampler. We'll be using a pot plant as an example, and the automatic masking feature will help us generate a point cloud and high-resolution mesh in just a few clicks. This technique is quick, easy, and perfect for creating 3D assets from photos.

Watch the full video tutorial here:

First, I imported 61 high-resolution photos of the pot plant into Adobe 3D Sampler and clicked "submit" to begin the process. The automatic masking tool was super helpful, and I found that taking photos on overcast days produced the best results.

Once I generated a point cloud object, I selected the level of geometry I wanted and produced a high-resolution mesh. The process was straightforward, and the results were impressive.

The final post-processed version of the reconstructed plant is shown in the video. Although there were some gaps and imperfections due to the lack of contrast in the initial photographs, the reconstructed mesh was a solid representation of the original set of photographs.

With just a few clicks, we can produce assets like this and apply filters on top of them in Substance 3D Sampler. The mesh can be exported as an FBX and the material as a PNG image, allowing us to create 3D objects in applications like Adobe 3D Stager.

The process is very intuitive, and the objects can be scaled and positioned easily using the gizmo, with the possibility of adding other 3D objects to create a scene.

To finish things off, I focused on adding materials and final touches to the 3D model created using Adobe 3D Stager. I deleted a part of the stool while I positioned the pot in it, and then I used the drag-and-drop feature to add the base colour for the plant.

The camera, planes, and lighting effects were used to enhance the rendering of the 3D model further. The final touches included dropping some concrete on the wall, creating a spotlight, and increasing the exposure and intensity to give a dramatic effect.

The photogrammetry process using Substance 3D Sampler is very simple and easy, although there are certain things that can be done to improve the final asset. Despite its simplicity, this process can produce good results in just a few minutes using a camera or phone to take photos of an asset.
