By Photoartists for Photoartists
Dek Unu Magazine was founded by photoartists for photoartists. While literary magazines, small presses and university journals provide some space for adventurous photography, they are often broad in scope, including perhaps a dozen different writers and a half-dozen visual artists. Additionally, they often restrict photography and other visual art to one or two images from each artist in an issue. Visual art often shares space with written work on the same page or is sprinkled around the contents wherever it fits. Dek Unu provides a photo-only outlet that focuses on the work of only one artist at a time, provides a respectful presentation of the work, and puts the artist in charge of theme and image selection.
Similarly, it is frequently true that a notice of acceptance for publication from a magazine is the last that an artist hears from the publisher. A note in the table of contents is often the only brand identifier or promotion that the artist realizes from the published work. Dek Unu promotes each month's featured artist extensively via email, web, and social media at three different times during the artist's publication month and, after each promotion, reports statistics to the artist regarding audience reactions. Beyond the publication month, each artist's issue is available in print in perpetuity and advertised through the magazine's archive and is permalinked at archive.org for the artist's use for reference, resumé, job and grant applications going forward.
