A gloved hand holds up a nitrate photo negative to a ceiling light. The picture, of a man in a military uniform, is sepia tone with the colors inverted – the bright spots are a dark copper color while the shadows give off a lot of light.

It is very difficult to preserve images captured on nitrate film. If you’ve ever heard about old film reels going up flames, you’ve heard about nitrate film. Our collection contains some still images on nitrate film. The one in the picture has begun to deteriorate. You can see the emulsion is sticky and the plastic base is discoloring. Because of their volatility and fragility, our Archives team expedites scanning Nitrate images when we find them and then places them in freezer storage to try and slow the deterioration process.

The inside of a film freezer at The Museum of Flight. It’s just a normal freezer but happens to be filled with rare photos and film stock that need to be kept cold to avoid deteriorating. Circular film canisters and shoebox-sized containers sit on the shelves.
