Photo Producing? We Do That, Too!

Photo Producing? We Do That, Too!

Photo and video production might seem like two sides of the same coin, but each requires a unique approach to bring out the best in every project. At Skalawag, we’re proud to offer both—and with us, you get a full team and proven processes that elevate your project from start to finish.?

When I applied for my position at Skalawag, I applied as a video producer. I had tons of experience finding crews, managing the scope and planning of the projects, guiding post-production, and understanding the needs to tell a great story through motion. So I was excited to take on a new challenge when our boss mentioned that we also do photo producing, and I was handling a shoot in a couple of weeks.?

I began my research and found that photo production has 3 parts: pre-production, production, and post-production. So, I thought, “Oh, it’s the same thing.”?

Incorrect.

From the crafting of the story to the delivery of the product, Photography is different. A compelling story must be told in a single frame rather than in multiple moving frames. This adjusts how everyone on the team must think about composition and visual impact. Every prop, shadow, and angle must create a complete, cohesive story in the viewer's mind.

Pre-Production

When you have just a moment to capture that perfect drizzle, the nature of the art is fast - and that starts during pre-production. Photo shoots tend to have smaller teams and fewer locations to source. Casting talent is a quicker process, and the models are needed for less time. The lead times for many of the styling elements (props, food styling, hair & make up) are about the same as video. However, the number of resets tend to be lower.

Production

While on set, photo shoots tend to require less set up time and less reset time. The set day itself can be wrapped quicker and/or clients can get a significantly larger volume of content in a 10 hour day. Lastly, clients can leave with usable photos in hand the day of the shoot if they so wish.

Post-Production

Post-production tasks such as editing, retouching, and color grading can be completed on set or in less than a week depending on the client’s needs. So all those beautiful shots you were drooling over can be yours quickly.
