Unless a specific deficiency is identified, supplements might usually be unnecessary if we eat and exercise properly. Heavy use of alcohol prevents our body from absorbing some vitamins like thiamine (Vit.B1) which can lead to some disorders in brain causing loss of memory unable to recover sometimes. So I agree Brian with you that supplements are necessary for treating alcoholism, but overusing them without medical prescription can lead to an overdose especially in fat-soluble vitamins.
