Phishing attack can be described a a type of social engineering attack where an attacker attempt to steal sensitive information such as password, account details, username, credit card details and so on without prior knowledge of the owner. They engaged in such activities mostly for suspicious reasons.
Types of Phishing Attck
1. Email Phishing:
Under this type of attack, an attacker sends an email to a recipient informing him/her that ABC bank has updated their security policy and it becomes necessary for the individual to update his/her details or risk losing that account. Unknowingly to the person that it is a phishing attack, the person will then key in all the requested information and before a blink of an eye, then attacker has emptied the recipient back account. this type of phishing is very common in Nigeria as of today.
2. Malware Phishing:
In this type of attack, an attacker will send a malicious attachment to a recipient via email. It is expected that when the recipient receive, he/she will download and view the attachment. When this is done, the attachment will automatically run some programs at the background of your silently thereby giving access to the attacker. From that moment upward the attacker can do whatever he/she likes with the system.
3. Keyloggers Attack:
This a type whereby an attacker secretly installs a program that captures keyboard input on a computer. With this attack it become very easy for the attacker to gain access to all your password.
Ways of Preventing Phishing Attack
- Firewall: Network and Computer based firewall is recommended in order to safe guard intruders.
- Antivirus: It is also advisable to install an update antivirus in order to prevent malware and Trojans.
- Pop-Ups: Be very careful when you see a pop up. Once you see any pop-ups that you are suspecting do not click it no matter how nice they my look.
- Windows Update: Try as much as possible to install your windows update regularly in order to prevent attacks.
- Site Security: Try as much as possible to make sure a site is secured before you access is it. Any website you are not to sure of the security to risk accessing it. It is advisable that you think before you click on any website.
- Personal information: Avoid sharing personal information anyhow on social media networks.
