Philosophy is the love of wisdom, a fierce embrace of relentless questions and embodied insight.
The insight of philosophy has been too quiet for too long only because we have not given it the voice it deserves.
Good philosophy is more needed now than at any previous time in history. Bad philosophy has to be shown the door.
Philosophy is no longer the luxury of the few but the need of the many. It's the enemy of foolishness and superficiality. But it can help turn around the foolish and superficial, offering them a measure of wisdom and depth.
Philosophers should start making a lot of noise about what's needed right now at this juncture in the human story, so that it won't be our ending juncture.
The whispers of philosophy throughout the ages have had much more substance than the shouts of the crowds, and have echoed far longer. But perhaps it should whisper no more. With the right tone, timber and volume, it can help greatly in our time.

1 年Very well said, Tom Morris. Good philosophy is the answer to a lot of problems and this idea needs to be spread. One of my personal sources of inspiration is David Deutsch's work.

5 年I've been saying this myself, Tom Morris, and echo your every word, plus I state it even more strongly when it comes to women needing to stand up, and speak out about how we philosophically NEED the world to evolve. I've branded myself a Wellbeing Philosopher because I despair at how little the average person thinks about how the structures of our world today are harming their chances for a life worth living - and altering the lives of all future humans. And it simply does not have to continue being like this. We can understand that everything wrong in the world came from human thought and can be changed, evolved, or destroyed based on more embodied human thought that is self-aware of the interconnectedness of the web of human capabilities. The world 'out there' has no inherent truth and even laws like gravity tend to buckle under rigorous attention to the minuscule details. As each person claims the power of their own mind, they almost instantaneously grasp the power of all other minds, if they can be freed from the confines of the cubicles we've surrendered to. Right now, out-of-the-box thinking is far too limited and we need out-of-the-paradigm thinking before we self-extinct.
On hiatus for a more important cause!
5 年Tom, personally I agree with you.? We need the guidance of philosophical principles more now than perhaps we ever have needed them.? But, while the power brokers in our society are using disinformation and social media to manipulate the? mind-sets of most of the population (which are for the most part mediocre in their capacities to ferret truth from fiction) hoping that the lessons of the great philosophers will find their voices amidst this din, I am afraid is at best wishful thinking.? ? ? ? ? ?
