The Philosophy

The Philosophy

One of the ways I recover from the swimming and physical workouts I do every day is cryotherapy.?

I initially began this practice about five years ago to stave off a knee replacement but have used it recently to recover from all the swim training and the Navy Seal swim.

?A group of young people runs the cryotherapy sessions, and I use that time to teach them 70’s rock and roll music.?During a recent session, the young lady running the session told me she was having a challenging time with her finances and relationship.?I felt compelled to ask her some questions.

As I asked her some questions, I started to tell her about some times early in my business career and marriage when I had some of the same challenges.?I told her that I was blessed to have a mentor who would not give me the answer but the guidance to figure out the solution for myself.?

He shared with me the philosophy that helped him build a business in movie theaters and restaurants.

“Every problem has a pathway to a solution.”??

He also told me that the key to solving your problem is to solve it without creating another problem.?That was the issue I was having.?I was pretty good at solving the problem at hand, but occasionally I would create additional problems from solving the initial problem.?What I learned is the key to personal leadership is to solve problems quickly without causing further issues.?

There were many challenges and problems I encountered on January 15, 2009. As the plane was going down into the Hudson River, things started moving quickly, as did the problems.??I told my young friend that my mentor's philosophy was so deeply ingrained that I unintentionally used it to solve the many issues that kept coming at me, which served me that day.

But it was during the following days and months that I started to have more turmoil than problems.?Problems began to stack one on top of the other, business, and personal.??I am currently writing my follow-up book to ‘Turmoil to Triumph’ and am detailing the turmoil I encountered and how I overcame it.?As I began writing, I thought about the philosophy that I learned from my mentor and how I intentionally started to turn the turmoil I was having into a triumph which started every day saying this as an incantation to myself. ?

“Every turmoil has a pathway to triumph.”?

As my cryotherapy session ended, I asked my young friend if she had seen Marvel’s “Infinity War.”?She had, and I took her back to the scene where Doctor?Strange?knows there’s only one?scenario?out of 14 million, six hundred, and five possible future outcomes where the Avengers defeat Thanos.?In “Endgame,” Ironman makes eye contact with Strange, who raises his finger to tell him that there's one way this works out – and it's up to Ironman.?I told her this is how I overcame my turmoil and problems; I had a philosophy and belief system that every turmoil has a pathway to triumph, just like in the movie.?There was one pathway for the Avengers to overcome “Infinity War” turmoil to triumph over Thanos in “Endgame.”?Sometimes the triumph is delayed, but ultimately, if you incorporate the fundamental tenets of personal leadership, decision making, and resourcefulness along with employing your “Distinct Advantage,” what you are most gifted at and passionate about, more often than not, you can turn the turmoil you are encountering into triumph.

I will check in on my young friend this week, but hopefully, she knows now that she is not the first person to have the problems she is having and can overcome her turmoil; the question is will she take action to overcome it?

With all the challenges 2020 presented, a strategy to turn that year of turmoil into 2021 being a year of triumph is to humble yourself, get around people who can help and support you.?Know there are mentors and role models that have swum the swim before. Be strong, face your personal "turmoil" head-on, forgive those who may have caused you strife, and begin your swim to triumph. ??Reach out to them and ask them to support and mentor you, and you will grow out of the turmoil you had in 2020 and on the road to a triumphant 2021,

Remember the value of association.?One way to grow out of the turmoil 2020 presented is to associate yourself with a group of five that will hold you to a standard and do something for someone who cannot do anything for you.

My mission is simple; help those going through their own turmoil from the past year with a pathway to victory and triumph.

Treat the TURMOIL of 2020 as your year of preparation and 2021 as your year to TRIUMPH!

Thank you to all who supported me when I went back into the Hudson River to swim with the Navy Seals and raise money for the GIGO Fund! Swimming has transformed my life in more ways than anyone knows. My mission now is to go back into the water with our?#MSAOutoftheBox?team and put a focus and raise money to defeat a foe that has affected almost every person or family in one way or another, cancer.

Fabulous article! An affirmation or incantation is so powerful, internally and externally, to guide you through turmoil. Having not only a mentor, but a small group, that can come together as a safe community for discourse, brainstorming, and support can not be underestimated. I benefit so often from what I like to call the "beauty of collective brains". I will have to look up your book, and look forward to hearing about the next as well-your background is intriguing! Thank you for sharing!

I have been asked the question, “What do you think the most valuable thing you can do to grow yourself and your business?” The answer has always been, nurture your network and have a great mentor.
