On Thursday (March 30), it was reported that a ferry carrying around 250 passengers and crew caught fire between the Philippine islands. The incident resulted in at least 12 deaths, while seven individuals were still missing. The governor of the southern island province of Basilan, Jim Hataman, confirmed the news to the media. The tragic event has caused shock and sadness amongst the local population, and the search and rescue operations are still ongoing.

The information has come to light that many people were burnt alive in this accident.

According to Governor Hataman, many of those who were rescued had jumped off the ferry in panic at the height of the fire. Fortunately, they were able to be plucked from the sea by a range of different rescue teams, including the coast guard, navy, another ferry, and local fishermen. The governor went on to say that the rescue and recovery operation is ongoing, with authorities double-checking the numbers from different rescue teams. As a result, there was the possibility that the figures provided by the governor could change over time.

The ferry, which has been identified as MV Lady Mary Joy 3, was reportedly on its way from the southern port city of Zamboanga to the city of Jolo in Sulu province when the fire broke out. The incident occurred midway off Basilan close to midnight, which would have made it even more challenging for rescue teams to navigate their way to the scene quickly. The situation was made even more dangerous due to the darkness of the night.

According to reports, the death toll included at least three children who were separated from their parents at the time of the fire. In addition, at least 23 passengers were injured and had to be taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Governor Hataman spoke to the Associated Press by telephone, stating that many passengers were woken up from their sleep by the commotion caused by the fire. He explained that some passengers had to jump off the ship to avoid the flames.

Sadly, most of the passengers who lost their lives drowned and were recovered at sea. It is a tragedy that has left many people in the Philippines in shock and disbelief. Governor Hataman confirmed that the burned ferry had been towed to Basilan’s shoreline and that an investigation into the incident was already underway. Authorities will be working hard to determine the cause of the fire and to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The people of the Philippines will undoubtedly be following the investigation closely in the coming days and weeks.
