Philanthropy is an act of kindness

Usually, adults associate the word philanthropy with rich people, but it is not exclusively for the wealthy. We should also disconnect the word philanthropy with money. Embedded in philanthropy is often the concept of empathy, a critical social and emotional skill. Ultimately, if parents value philanthropy and wish to support empathy development in their children, it is likely they will want to pass this value on to their children. Philanthropy is an act of kindness. One can donate his unused or old items (one's garbage is another person's treasure), one can donate their time or their services. According to developmental psychologist Marilyn Price Mitchell, children who perform acts of kindness experience increased wellbeing, popularity, and acceptance among peers. This, in turn, leads to better classroom behaviour and higher academic achievement.

From any money that they have or get, ask them at all times to save 10% of that money for philanthropy. Help them choose a cause and donate that money, regardless of the amount. You can also buy something with that amount of money and donate that something that you bought. In that way, the child will materialise their donation. I donated a doll to this charity; ...etc. The chances are that every time they will try to buy something more meaningful. Ask them to donate their old games, define the cause, choose what they will donate, by when, and help them, be there with them. Do it together, encourage them. Talk to them after each act of kindness about their feelings, what they've seen, what they've experienced, if it was important for them, and why. Ask them to donate their time and go to an orphanage and play for 2 hours with the children there, bring your games too. Ask them to go to a zoo and help with the animal feeding, and donate their time. Teach them to give! They can organise toys and games; perhaps instead fundraising events could be organized+, where all the children at their school will donate to that cause so the act of kindness will be bigger and meaningful to more children.

Through the experience of family-based philanthropic organisations donor children are benefiting, just as the recipients are. They learn about worlds beyond their own experience. They also learn confidence in public speaking, how to make a case, how to choose a charity, research skills, fundraising, entrepreneurial skills, tolerance, and empathy. Through this experience, they can then define what philanthropy means to them and what change they would like to see in the world. They learn, just by small acts of giving, how to become a change maker, what it means to be a good person and citizen as well as learning from and teaching others how to collaborate and make a difference. They learn about the multiplier effect of small acts and the large impact that can have on their communities. ....
