Philadelphia Leads State in Severe Traffic Accidents

The Philadelphia area has a stunning number of automobile accidents, compared to other parts of Pennsylvania, and 80% of traffic deaths and severe injuries occurred on just 12% of the area's streets! The city's VISION ZERO initiative strives to reduce or eliminate most of these traffic-related injuries.

The streets where most injuries occur are indicated in the graphic below and on the VISION ZERO website at www.visionzerophl.com

More than 60% of accidents in Philadelphia County resulted in injury or death in 2020, and traffic fatalities increased over the prior year. There were more than 10,000 auto accidents that year in the county, the largest number of car crashes of any county in Pennsylvania. There are nearly 30 auto accidents a day in the region, more than one per hour!

In addition, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that Philadelphia County has the highest number of traffic deaths per capita in the United States, making the area even more dangerous for auto accidents than cities like New York.

Add to that the fact that injuries are increasing for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcycle riders. Those account for over 30% of traffic-related injuries, and there have already been several pedestrian deaths from accidents this year.

The City of Philadelphia has pledged to reduce the injury numbers by re-engineering city streets, educating commuters, encouraging reduced speeds, and much more. Their VISION ZERO plan is detailed on their website: www.visionzerophl.com

You can play a significant role in reducing your risk of injury by slowing down when driving, taking extra precautions when biking or walking, and adopting a personal policy to avoid texting any other distractions when behind the wheel. Many accidents occur because of excessive speed and distracted driving and are preventable.
