Music Edition: Phil Collins – No Jacket Required (1985)

No Jacket Required is the third solo album by English drummer and singer-songwriter Phil Collins, released on February 18 1985 by?Virgin Records?in the UK and by?Atlantic?and?WEA?internationally.

The album's title came from an incident at The Pump Room in Chicago, Illinois where Collins was denied admittance into the establishment because of his casual attire.

No Jacket Required propelled Collins into international stardom, earning widespread acclaim and winning three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year in 1986. The album features?Helen Terry,?Peter Gabriel, and?Sting?as guest backing vocalists.

In 2001, No Jacket Required was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America for selling 12 million copies in the US and amassed worldwide sales of over 25 million copies, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time.

In tribute to Phil Collins and his highly successful No Jacket Required, here’s a short story I wrote (see below) that weaves in all of the album's iconic 11 tracks:

  1. “Sussudio”
  2. “Only You Know and I Know”
  3. “Long Long Way To Go”
  4. “I Don’t Wanna Know”
  5. “One More Night”
  6. “Don’t Lose My Number”
  7. “Who Said I Would”
  8. “Doesn’t Anybody Stay Together Anymore”
  9. “Inside Out”
  10. “Take Me Home”
  11. “We Said Hello Goodbye”

There’s This Girl That’s Been On My Mind…

"Sussudio" has been playing in my head constantly. It’s been a tough journey, and though we still have a "Long Long Way to Go," I don’t want to dwell on the unknown—"I Don’t Wanna Know." Seems like “We Said Hello Goodbye” so many times and I feel like you know me “Inside Out.” For us, I long for just "One More Night" together, as what we share is something "Only You Know and I Know." Hold me tight, take me in, and "Take Me Home" tonight—please "Don’t Lose My Number." "Who Said I Would" ever find something so true? But in the back of my mind, I can’t help but wonder, "Doesn’t Anybody Stay Together Anymore?"

With its energetic rhythms and heartfelt lyrics, No Jacket Required remains one of Collins' best-selling albums, showcasing his versatility and emotional depth as both an artist and storyteller.
