PhD: Why should you care?

PhD: Why should you care?

Embarking on a PhD program is undoubtedly one of the hardest decisions because of the sizeable investments in terms of time and effort. While I stumbled on the US graduate program in search for a better life, looking back, it has been exceptually rewarding, intellectually, personally and professionally.

PhD programs, especially in the US, is not only intellectually stimulating but also provides a platform to make substantial contributions. Since I debated this topic so many times, I could not resist but to document why a PhD program is a great career path and an attractive option for those who aspire to reach the pinnacle of their field, especially in terms of knowledge and expertise. Currently, I happen to work in the hi-tech and semiconductor industry. Industry luminaries for the leading companies inspired me further to analyze this.

Intellectual Challenge and Growth

One of the most compelling reasons to pursue a PhD program is the intellectual challenge it offers. The first task in hand as a Doctoral candidate is to find a topic that has not been solved before and is interesting & hard enough for you to achieve a degree. Once you find that and pass your 'qualifier' as well as 'candidacy' exams, you plunge into the ocean of problem solving. Doctoral candidates engage in rigorous research, critical analysis, and problem-solving on complex issues. This process promotes intellectual growth by pushing individuals to expand their boundaries of knowledge and develop advanced analytical skills. The pursuit of a PhD encourages a lifelong commitment to learning and the development of a deep and specialized expertise in a particular area of study.

?

Contributions to Knowledge

PhD programs are not just about acquiring knowledge; they are also about creating it and contributing to the existing body of knowledge. Doctoral research often leads to the discovery of new information, innovative theories, and groundbreaking solutions to real-world problems. PhD graduates often play a vital role in advancing society. Countless companies came from doctoral research work; Google and Meraki are the two that comes to mind immediately. In the semiconductor space, stalwarts like William Shockley, Gordon Moore to current leaders such as Jensen Huang and Lisa Su all excelled in their respective fields by pushing the boundary of knowledge.

Impressive Training

One of the most enjoyable aspects of PhD program is the liberty of capturing knowledge in area of your choice. While my undergrad was in civil engineering, I took interest in learning variety of topics ranging from Operations Research, Estimation Theories, Parallel Processing, Statistics and Neural Networks. As a graduate student in the US, you enjoy (almost) full freedom to pick subjects you like, craft your own path and pursue area you love most. This independence in pursuit to knowledge combined with the responsibility of finding the problem you’d like to solve help you become a stronger and effective problem solver. Hence, if you want to solve a hard unsolved problem, there is never a better choice than someone who has gone through the Doctoral program. Morris Chang, the founder of TSMC failed his PhD qualifier twice at MIT before he finally got his PhD from Stanford in 1964. ???

?

Career Opportunities

While some perceive PhD programs as limiting in terms of career options and only good for research or teaching roles, in real life they open doors to a wide range of opportunities. Graduates with doctoral degrees are highly sought after in many private companies. They can pursue careers as university professors, researchers, consultants, policy analysts, and industry experts. The expertise gained during a PhD program is applicable in numerous fields, making PhD holders adaptable and versatile professionals. Key roles in economics, semiconductor, pharmaceutical and artificial intelligence are often filled in only by PhD graduates. ??

?

Personal Fulfillment

The pursuit of a PhD is often a deeply personal and fulfilling journey. It allows you to delve into your area of interest and passion, explore unanswered questions, and make a meaningful impact. The satisfaction derived from contributing to the advancement of knowledge and solving complex problems is immeasurable and can provide a strong sense of purpose and accomplishment. My biggest gain from the program was to have the opportunity to be surrounded by incredibly motivated, interesting and smart minds. Being surrounded by poor, albeit smart and knowledge hungry graduate students were the best three years of my life. ?

?

Transferable Skills

In addition to specialized knowledge, the biggest advantage of PhD program is a chance of acquiring a wide range of transferable skills. These skills include critical thinking, communication, project management, data analysis, and problem-solving, which are highly valuable in various career paths. Graduates often find that the skills they acquire during their doctoral studies are applicable in a broad spectrum of roles and industries.

?

In conclusion, a PhD program is a remarkable career path that offers intellectual challenge, the opportunity to contribute to knowledge, diverse career options, personal fulfillment, networking opportunities, and valuable transferable skills. While it is an incredibly demanding, that requires dedication, perseverance, and sacrifices, the rewards are substantial. PhD graduates become experts in their fields and make significant contributions to society, making this career path an attractive choice for those with a passion for knowledge and a desire to make a difference.

Couple of important disclaimers: if money is the most important metric for your personal success, this may not be the best path for you. A PhD certainly does not guarantee career success or high income. On the contrary, you are likely to make significant personal sacrifices in earthly pleasures by hiding in labs while your classmates have a good time, stay single or make your partner miserable by not being around much, and being stretched financially during the early days of your professional life. Only you can decide if this worth the effort and if this is right for you. I have realized that not everyone is ready for this sacrifice and that is OK, because this is definitely not for everyone!

Great article! I share similar perspectives. The duration of the PhD program in the current fast paced world is something that we should consider before embarking on it.

Hi Deb Bhattacharjee: Great perspectives on the practical value of PhD for complex problem-solving, expanding the body of knowledge with impactful innovation, and the intellectual stimulation of working with like-minded, smart individuals -- to reiterate a few of the considerations that you have listed in your post. Brought back fond memories of our work together with talented colleagues and demanding clients during our management/technology consulting days at EY and Capgemini, and our interactions since those days! I am sure you continue to inspire colleagues and clients with your expertise and passion -- both from your PhD work from all those years ago as a graduate student as well as the wealth of experience built over the years as a business leader. PS: Wanted to add another technology leader to your list of PhDs making a substantial impact in the business world, the Chairman and CEO of my current company, IBM, Dr. Arvind Krishna (https://www.ibm.com/about/arvind).
