In September 2023, the Technical and Vocational Training (TVET) Programme marked a significant milestone as it celebrated three years of successful operation. With each passing year, the program has continued to thrive, empowering individuals with essential skills in plumbing, painting, electrical work, and solar energy. As we reflect on the journey thus far, it's evident that the programme has made remarkable strides in fulfilling its mission of equipping learners with the tools they need to succeed in the workforce. As a part of our productivity mission , this programme aims to eliminate barriers standing in the way of employment. We train youth in practical skills that are indeed needed in a developing economy, so that they may gain employment and contribute to economic prosperity.?
Part of the tools they need to remove barriers to employment is exposure to employment opportunities. Therefore, on the 31st of January 2024, Pharo Foundation held a Career Day for the TVET graduates and students. This event hosted 75 current Vocational Training students and some graduates as well as 10 prominent companies that catered to many Vocational Training paths of employment. This event was invaluable as it gave students a platform to network with potential employers and gain an insight into industries they are interested in working in.
?Students were able to interact with key stakeholders and gain insights that would shape their professional journeys. Attendees had the opportunity to network with representatives from companies such as Rehubco , SOLARGEN Technology , SSWE (Society of Women Engineers) , Muftaax Construction Company , Barre Housing & Construction Co. , BALAD, Caparol, Pharo Ventures & Construction, and Sompower , the largest electric utility in Somaliland. These companies represented diverse interests and a broad job market for the prospective graduates to explore.

?One of the notable highlights of the careers event was the presentation of a short documentary showcasing the success stories of Pharo Vocational Training graduates. The video illustrated how graduates have transitioned from the programme to secure employment with prestigious companies within Somaliland. It showcased the opportunities available to them and celebrated their success as well as providing an insight into the training programme. It served as a source of inspiration for current students, demonstrating the tangible impact of vocational training on individuals' lives and careers. The students watched with pride as they saw their fellow graduates in the video.? Having a chance to witness the success stories of fellow Pharo Vocational Training graduates showcased tangible achievements and real-world accomplishments. This visual representation has motivated current students, creating a strong sense of possibility and determination as they envision their own future paths.
Part of encouraging employment was the focus on employment for all. If we want to remove barriers to employment, it cannot be for only half the population, therefore, we want to eliminate the gender disparity that is often prominent in Somaliland. Rakia, an engineer and a participant from SSWE , emphasised the importance of empowering women in engineering and advocated for a brighter, more inclusive future. Her words resonated deeply with attendees, highlighting the transformative potential of vocational education in breaking down barriers and promoting gender equality in traditionally male-dominated fields. Her presence at the career day was especially a highlight to our female students as her company is filled with female engineers and employees.
?Students had the opportunity to network, gather business cards and make meaningful connections in the industry through this event. One of the attendees said: “ The atmosphere during the Career Day was vibrant and engaging. Everyone was talking loudly, passionately and you could tell they felt a sense of purpose.” They were inspired by the success stories showcased in the video and motivated by the opportunity to network. By providing students with a renewed sense of purpose and motivation to excel in their studies, the event served as a catalyst for personal and professional growth, setting the stage for a brighter future for all participants.
