Is Pharma Accelerating Cloud Adoption?
Pharma may exhibit some caution with cloud adoption. However, this seems to be most relevant to adopting GxP in the cloud. Most everywhere else Pharma seem to be catching up quite nicely especially in the fast growing and advancing Biotech space (see #3), where we can see many new Pharma start-ups adopting cloud for end-to-end operations. The hesitation with moving GxP applications and data into the cloud seems to be driven mostly by the lack of regulatory guidance creating the perception of risk.
That said, Johnson & Johnson is leading Pharma into the cloud with a goal of going ALL IN hybrid and private cloud by 2020 - See Dan Zelem, J&J CTO at AWS re:Invent. Johnson & Johnson is moving aggressively to the cloud, aiming to have 85% of its applications in cloud systems from Amazon.com Inc., Microsoft Corp Azure. and NTT Communications Corp. by 2018 - a sentiment already mentioned by Sandi Peterson, Group Worldwide Chairman back in 2016. Dan also calls out advancing GxP compliance in the cloud together with AWS and others!
Additionally, here is an interesting article about why Pharma is moving into the cloud and a recent article on 2017 State Of Cloud Adoption And Security.
