PGDip Ultrasound for Tropical Diseases
?? For the Remote Medic working in environments where tropical diseases are prevalent, it is important to have the clinical skills to assess for these pathologies. Earlier this year, I spent five days at the University of Pavia on a short course showing how to use ultrasound to find tropical diseases in a patient. The University has just published a new Postgraduate Diploma on this topic. It is completely online. I have enrolled and am looking forward to the content.
?? This PGDip is open to any paramedic, nurse, or physician. This will give you a deep dive into POCUS and the use of ultrasound for tropical diseases. If you do not have experience with ultrasound, the College offers a two-day Austere and Prehospital Ultrasound course in the UK, Norway, Germany and Malta.
The PGDip in Ultrasound in Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine benefits healthcare providers working in austere environments. It equips them with the expertise to effectively utilise Point-of-Care (PoC) ultrasound, a crucial tool for diagnosing and managing a wide range of tropical diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and dengue fever. Integrating ultrasound into clinical practice in resource-poor settings enhances diagnostic accuracy, facilitating timely and appropriate treatment interventions. This is vital in low-resource settings where advanced diagnostic tools are often unavailable.
The cost for the online PGDip is €1400.

The course structure, which includes over 70 hours of lectures and interactive discussions, ensures a comprehensive understanding of infectious diseases' epidemiology and clinical presentations. By focusing on real-world applications of PoC ultrasound, healthcare providers can better manage complex cases encountered in tropical and low-resource environments. This practical knowledge is complemented by interactive case studies, which reinforce learning and provide opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge in simulated scenarios, thus preparing providers for real-life challenges.
Moreover, the faculty's extensive experience and ongoing research in tropical medicine and ultrasound contribute to the course's credibility and relevance. The involvement of experts who have significantly contributed to the field through publications and joint projects ensures that the content is current and evidence-based. This continuous professional development is crucial for healthcare providers in austere settings, where staying updated with the latest medical advancements and practices directly impacts patient care quality and outcomes.
