The PFS Sector: Driving Change in the Modern Forecourt
As technology evolves and trends change, petrol forecourts are transforming rapidly into more than just a refilling station. With a growing number of electric vehicles on our roads, the need for convenient, fast-charging infrastructure is ever more present.
As the number of these charging stations increases, there is a surging demand for innovative retail spaces that cater to the requirements of these drivers. As a result, we can begin to see the evolution of petrol stations into that of the modern forecourt: where EV and retail begin to take centre stage.
At Astley, we have had the pleasure of supporting PFS and EV brands with their branding solutions, from the conceptual design to the specialist installation and maintenance. Our unrivalled PFS expertise, paired with our extensive knowledge of retail brands, means we offer an inimitable skillset that encompasses all features of the modern forecourt.

So, what do these features look like?

EV Charging
It is predicted that by 2025, 38% of global car sales will be electric or hybrid. With this emergence of electric vehicles, consumer behaviours are continuing to shift concerning the charging infrastructure and retail spaces within forecourts.
Fuel retailers are perfectly positioned to adapt to this shift toward electric mobility and begin to implement EV charging points into their forecourt layout. For example, we are thrilled to continue working with MFG, who we have supported with branding solutions for their Ultra-Rapid chargers, as well as the development of their new EV forecourt totems.
We have also loved working on the EV initiatives for Fastned. Helping to support the brand's UK debut, we worked with them at their first-ever site in the UK in Sunderland, producing the site signage and totems.
As part of our relationship with them, we provide design services, surveying the sites and creating site specific brand packs for them, visualising the environmental graphics before then manufacturing and installing.
When manufacturing large-format stainless steel products such as totems, safety must be made a priority at each stage of design and production. Our emphasis on safety and compliance is paramount with the manufacture of these products; having achieved BS EN 1090 for steel fabrication, we can support clients with the safe design, manufacture, and installation of these larger format structural signage assets.
What's more, having a custom-built production facility in Gateshead specifically designed for the fabrication of large totems allows us to design and manufacture totems up to 10 metres tall!

Retail Spaces
Not only will EV help to develop the refuelling offering, but it will also affect the retail services that inhabit forecourt spaces. The dwell time for an EV charge is averaged to be between 30 and 40 minutes, compared to the current dwell time of three minutes for a typical petrol/diesel engine. This allows PFS brands to expand and develop their adjacent services to allow consumers to shop, dine, and unwind while they wait for their cars to charge up.
From fast-food chains to major grocery retailers, the forecourt is evolving into a one-stop-shop for not only fuel, but for a wide array of consumer goods. Popular food and beverage brands have taken advantage of this opportunity, converting what was once a quick stop into a sit-down dining experience.
As an approved supplier for major brands, Astley also offers expert signage solutions for these retail developments. From kiosk and shop fascia to internal graphics and POS, we are ideally placed to bring these new retail spaces to life.
Digitalisation
As retail becomes paramount in today’s forecourt, it is clear to see that consumer preferences mainly lead to convenience. Retail technologies such as self-checkouts help to reduce waiting times and streamline the overall refueling experience.
From digital screens at the pump to digital billboards and self-service checkouts, the modern forecourt offers many opportunities to embrace digital messaging and hardware. Alongside traditional signage, digital signage can offer the ability to update and adapt content in response to ever-changing trends. In an industry that is continuously developing, embracing digital solutions is key to staying relevant in such a forward-thinking market.
And so...
