PFAS in drinking water: Australia is consulting on the subject

The NHMRC (National Health and Medical Research Council) is consulting on updated guidelines on four PFAS (perfluorinated alkylated substances) in drinking water.

Under this draft the limits of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) will be stricter, and the perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS) will be subjected to limits for the first time.

Also, a fifth compound, the GenX (hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid and ammonium salt) was assessed, though no guidelines were proposed.

GenX is less persistent in nature than other compounds, but still raise concerns over some studies suggesting detrimental effects in animals.

Those new guidelines follow the actions of other governments, like Canada and the US, that recently updated their guidelines on PFAS in water.

The new guidelines are expected to be concluded for April 2025.
