Pew Research has just released its 2021 Social Media Usage study and the results are not surprising. Facebook continues to be one of the most widely used online social platforms among adults in the United States. However, YouTube has become the top site used, knocking Facebook from it’s #1 position.
Below are a few more of their findings. The findings come from a nationally representative survey of 1,502 adults conducted by telephone from January 25 to February 8, 2021.

General Social Platform Use
· Women still dominate as Pinterest users with 46% of women using the site and only 16% of men.
· 69% of adults in the United States use Facebook.
· 49% of Facebook users visit the site several times a day.
· 13% of adults in the United States are using the Nextdoor platform.
· 18- to 29-year-olds are the top users of Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok.
YouTube Demographics
· 82% of men use YouTube.
· 80% of women use YouTube.
· 95% of users are 18-29 years old (the largest age group).
· 90% of adults earning over $75k annually use YouTube.
· 90% of adults with a college degree use YouTube.
· 84% of adults in urban areas use YouTube with 81% in suburban areas and 74% in rural areas.
Facebook Demographics
· 61% of men use Facebook.
· 77% of women use Facebook.
· 77% of users are 30-49 years old (the largest age group).
· 76% of adults earning $30k to $49,999 use Facebook.
· 70% of adults in urban areas and 70% in suburban areas use Facebook, with 67% using the platform in rural areas.
Instagram Demographics
· 36% of men use Instagram.
· 46% of women use Instagram.
· 71% of users are 18-29 years old (the largest age group).
· 47% of adults earning over $75k annually use Instagram.
· 45% of adults in urban areas and 41% in suburban areas use Instagram, with 25% using the platform in rural areas.
