PEUGEOT THAT GAVE 20-YEAR-OLD RICHARD BURNS HIS FIRST BIG BREAK FOR SALE WITH ICONIC AUCTIONEERS

Buirns wasthe only Englishman to have won the World Rally Championship

A second great Peugeot in this salwe is a rare 1984 Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 ‘Homologation’ Special £275,000 both at the ICONIC AUCTIONEERS race Retro Classic and Competition car sale 23rd & 24th February

?For fans of the Peugeot marque this next Iconic Auctioneers sale promises two phenomenal cars from this stable – one with British automotive history in its DNA and then something almost as rare.

The link between these two cars is that the standard 205 road car is an ‘homologation special’ requiring Peugeot to make 200 road cars to allow the 205 T16 to be used in International rallying. This was the car that Peugeot used in rallying after the 309, like the Richard Burns car in the sale. So both are significant in their own right to the history of rallying and specifically Peugeot’s involvement at the time. (Homologation refers to the process? to certify a car is manufactured to meet the standards for sale).

The first of these two stunners is the fabulous 1987 Peugeot 309 GTi 16 V ‘Group A’ ex-Works rally car which saw the start of the Richard Burns legend now for sale at £70,000 to £80,000.?

During 1991, a young ‘up and coming’ Englishman, Richard Burns, had won the Peugeot Cup and factory team leader, Des O’Dell, was keen to promote his young star on the international stage. His goal was to find the next British driver to take on the World Rally Championship, so a late entry was put in for the 1991 RAC Rally in this car for Burns and co-driver Robert Reid. Seeded at number 59, they were quickly on the pace and by the end of Day One they had halved their ranking and were lying in 30th place overall.

Soon the pair were well inside the top 20 with only one other two-wheel drive car ahead of them. Richard, at the tender age of just 20, was making his presence felt for the first time at the very top of the sport as his fastest times in class continued through the famous Northern stages in Kielder Forest.

1987 Peugeot 309 GTi 16V 'Group A' ex-Works (Richard Burns)

ESTIMATE: £70,000 - £80,000

By the finish, after four gruelling days, he delivered a dominant 'Two-wheel-drive' Class victory and a fine 16th place overall out of 150 starters. Their names were now established, and the pair would go on to a magnificent future, winning the British Rally Championship outright in 1993 with Subaru, winning his first round of a World Championship - the Safari Rally in 1998, and going on to eventually become World Rally Champions in 2001 for Mitsubishi.? This is the car that gave Richard his proper start and is now part of our British rally history.

In 1999 with Richard Burns’ career flying he bought back this car which had given him his first big break, and had it fully professionally rebuilt and restored. It became the first car to form the start of a significant collection of his competition and road cars and occupied pride of place within the Richard Burns Collection until his untimely tragic ?death in 2005 from a brain tumour, aged just 34.

Richard is the only Englishman to have ever won the World Rally Championship and this car is a significant part of his history. So here is a rare opportunity an important ex-Works car today. Simple to run and relatively straightforward to drive, E777 KKV will always be welcome at so many special events worldwide.

And if one rare Peugeot is not enough here is another.

?

1984 Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 Group B Homologation Special - Number 176 of just 200. Estimate: £235,000 - £275,000

This stunning car is Number 176 of just 200 road-going 205 Turbo 16 Homologation Specials constructed, fully UK registered and less than 10,000 miles from new. With only 200 units produced, it's a rare and sought-after jewel for automotive collectors and enthusiasts and capable of a blistering 137mph.

It shares nothing with the mass-production 205 except the windscreen, doors and headlamps and mechanically it is completely different, most notably its mid-engined and 4-wheel-drive layout. The fact that it was shaped and named to be a 205 member was purely to promote the sales of the mass-production car.

The 1985 Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 car that we have on offer here is car number 176 of 200, making it one of the final road-going homologation examples produced and was imported from France in early 2021. Since its arrival in the UK it has been registered with the DVLA and is now fully legal for UK roads. This registration is supported by a Letter of Authenticity from the Peugeot Club UK which can be found in the car's history file.

The car’s odometer reading of just 16,000km (9,940 miles) makes it a super example of perhaps the most accomplished and practical of all road-legal Group B designs and for this reason, not to mention its quirky appeal, dynamic capabilities or illustrious sporting heritage, the term “homologation special” has never seemed more appropriate.
