Petroleum coke carburizer

Petroleum coke is a widely used carburizer at present. It is obtained by atmospheric distillation of crude oil or vacuum distillation of petroleum bitumen as a by-product of refined crude oil. It can be used as raw materials for the preparation of petroleum coke, petroleum coke, and then raw petroleum coke can be obtained after the original coking. Production of raw petroleum coke amounts to about less than 5% of the crude it USES. The United States produces about 30 million tons of raw petroleum coke a year. The impurities in raw petroleum coke are high in content and cannot be used directly as a carburizer. They must be calcined differently first.

Petroleum coke is available in spongy, acicular, granular and fluid-like varieties.

Spongy petroleum coke is produced by the delayed coking method, in which it can also be used as a raw material for calcining petroleum coke due to the high content of sulfur and metals commonly used as fuel during firing. The calcined sponge coke can be used mainly in making aluminum and as a carburizer.

Needle coke of petroleum has high aromatics content and low impurity content of raw material. This coke has a needle-like structure that is very easily broken, sometimes called graphite coke, which is used to make graphite electrodes after calcination.

Granular petroleum coke is a hard particle, obtained from high sulfur and asphaltene, and is mainly fueled by delayed coking.

Fluidized petroleum coke is prepared by continuous coking in a fluidized bed. It has fine grain shape, non-directional structure, high sulfur content and low volatility.

The purpose of calcining petroleum coke is to remove sulfur, moisture, and volatiles. When calcined at 1200 ~ 1350 ℃, the raw petroleum coke can be made essentially pure carbon.

The biggest impact of calcination on the production of petroleum coke is in the aluminium industry, where 70% is used to produce anodes for the reduction of bauxite operations. The amount of calcined petroleum coke produced in the United States accounts for about 6 percent of cast iron carbonizers.
