Peter’s Tech Services apprenticeship experience
DWP Digital
We build user-friendly services that help millions of people access the support they need. We are Digital With Purpose.
In September 2022 I found out that my role at the charity I worked at was being made redundant. Looking back at that moment it was arguably a blessing in disguise.
Knowing the Civil Service has a reputation for putting emphasis and value on professional growth, I applied for a position as a Business Analyst apprentice. Fast forward to March 2023 and I started in the Release & Test team within Tech Services – the biggest area in DWP Digital, managing hundreds of essential user-facing services, products, and platforms.
I’m now halfway through my apprenticeship. There has been a steep learning curve, but it’s been everything I’d hoped it would be. I’ve had a chance stretch myself and develop new skills and I’ve really enjoyed learning about business analysis and getting stuck into the work. I’ve really appreciated the detailed teaching and support given by my apprenticeship provider AssistKD, and how it is has been effectively mixed in with my day-to-day work in Tech Services.
Across Tech Services and DWP Digital I have met so many people who have been happy to chat, share their own thoughts and ideas, and offer support. This not only includes the amazing Business Analyst community in DWP Digital, but also colleagues who are not specifically related to my work or area.

My favourite thing about working in Tech Services has got to be the people – whether that’s in my team or generally in the workplace. I’ve been amazed by the support and encouragement and insight people offer.
If I could offer advice to anyone doing an apprenticeship, it would be to take advantage of the community of practice you are a part of. From my experience, the Business Analyst Community has been a safe place to learn, ask questions and be offered development opportunities.
Don’t be afraid to reach out either. It can seem daunting sending someone a message, posting on a community page, or arranging a meeting, but every time I have done this I’ve always been met with kindness and often gratefulness that someone would go to them to ask for advice.
My goal for 2024 is quite simple – more of the same. More chances to develop, more chances to learn, not to settle with where I’m at but take advantage of the many great opportunities at DWP Digital so that I can look back and know I got as much out of the year as I could.
