Peter Dutton's got this wrong
It has taken women decades to achieve some level of representation in workplaces across the private and public sector.?
Step by step, office culture, societal norms, laws and workplace policies have improved so more people, regardless of gender and caring responsibilities, could build successful, long-lasting careers.?
Despite this, we are still battling key challenges like the gender pay gap.?
The latest WGEA report reveals that women in Australia earn 78 cents on average for every $1 earned by a man.?
It’s even worse at certain companies.?
At popular plus-sized fashion retailer City Chic Collective, where 96 per cent of the workforce is female, women make just 33 cents on average for every $1 earned by male employees.?
At Seafolly, women make up 97 per cent of the workforce but earn just 38 cents on average for every $1 earned by men.?
Change is happening but it’s happening slowly.
Despite this, Opposition leader Peter Dutton seems to want to slow progress down even further.?
This week, he defended a plan to force public sector workers back to the office in yet another move replicating the Trump administration.?
“[It] doesn’t discriminate against people on the basis of gender,” he said.?
Dutton insisted that pushing people back to the office will not negatively impact women and then flippantly suggested female staff opt for the “plenty of job-sharing arrangements” out there.?
Lawmakers cannot afford to make such costly decisions without weighing up the true impacts and assessing the evidence.?
Multiple studies have found that working from home arrangements significantly boost participation at work, especially for women with young children and caring responsibilities — including housework, which women still carry the burden of.
Meanwhile organisations that mandate office days have been found to hire women at lower rates and also see a disproportionate number of women quitting their jobs.
Cracking down on working from home and flexible policies not only undermines the productivity and efforts of employees, especially those with caring responsibilities — but it could end up limiting the progress working women have made.?
Australian Council of Trade Unions president Michele O’Neil says Dutton’s push to end working from home options for public services will only worsen the gender pay gap.
“Working women disproportionately have to juggle work and caring responsibilities, so workplace rights like requesting work-from-home arrangements are making it easier to keep their jobs,” she says.?
In case you missed it!?
Is there a gender pay gap at your favourite fashion retailer??
Brands like Pandora, Seafolly and City Chic are popular for a wide range of women.
Women also make up a significant part of their workforces – but there’s a shocking gap in how much they earn compared to male colleagues.?Read more here.?

2 天前I don't necessarily agree. Cultural Norms and their hidden impact in discrimination and diversity. Read my article more insight. When we consider gender inequality, and their contribution to systemic discrimination, we must look at cultural norms.?? It is important to remember that men as well as women have felt the boundaries of expectations established from cultural norms.? We often focus on the female experience of cultural norms, to be beautiful, slender, youthful etc. #TaylorSwift in a recent interview gave the example, “If you make a move, men are called strategic, while a woman is called calculated.”? However, men and women experience the pressure to conform to stereotypical gender norms.? Women will be equally discriminated by women in recruitment and promotion. Therefore skill based engagement & procedural compliance is vital.? Most sex discrimination is seen to be gender driven Discrimination say Sex Discrimination of a woman is considered to be carried out primarily by a male. Not true… when we consider cultural norms. https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/cultural-norms-hidden-impact-discrimination-diversity-rachel-quilty-w9sjc ?#IWD25 #IWD? #LinkedInNewsAustralia #InternationalWomensDay #Leadership

5 天前Btw his has an accomplished personal business success, leadership, integrity, honesty, financial independence and a history of good business choices. Australia needs Peter Dutton this season to facilitate the restoration of what’s left of Australia. We can’t manufacture in Australia the power bill he’s quadrupled! How do you adjust the food cost in a restaurant for instance! If big business boys get catered events daily, it’s prudent to allow small businesses . Remember they are also owned by women and employ women and give access every opportunity that men have. The country was born under Judea Christian democracy, we currently have hostile protests for 20 months celebrating in front of our opera house, all the way up Pitt street every Sunday in the CBD disruptions to businesses, traffic and as you women watch them. They are Marching all over our rights women to free speech, gay rights, education, ability to borrow money and inherit money lockdown the laws just need to be enforced! We have 1 million islamic soldiers … So start a movement where you do something for women perhaps a global franchise super kitchens in every church teaching disenfranchised how to cook how to handle food how to communicate and how to share.

5 天前I find t is hard to gauge discrepancy is not a standard equation, as every women if born in a democracy has the education and life comforts should take responsibility for success or failure. Just like men to compete, have a plan, have finances and purpose or desire to make a difference money does not equate to happiness and peace. in life choosing opportunities to study or learn anything for 1000 hours would become your minimum requirement of effort learning something to be an expert. Depending on your country of citizenship, women can choose a labouring physical job and be equal ?? or better than the other job applicants. I support the best person being rewarded with the job title and the hard work 24/7 hours of sacrifice required to keep the job. Women’s liberation has been asleep since the 70s the speed wobble is a frightening! We are so close to having them demand sharia law in Australia , not only have the woman not stood up for Isreal. Women in Australia have applauded violent indigenous abuse for centuries along with the existing misogyny that is exacerbated and facilitated in every mosque and under Every hijab! The turning a blind eye to the oppressions the child sex slavery domestic violence the murder the rapes!
