PETE CARROLL'S 3 RULES OF SUCCES

PETE CARROLL'S 3 RULES OF SUCCES

They say that during times of greatest failure, our "real" self comes out.

After watching the Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll deal with the Superbowl loss to the New England Patriots in 2015, I became more interested in him than I have ever been in football.

In every interview, the media appeared to badger him about the loss, and seemed pre-occupied with their assumption that he must be experiencing intense sorrow after the "devastating loss."

The truth is that Pete Carroll had outgrown everyone that interviewed him. He plays by different rules of life; recognizing that life is about transformation, not about "winning a game." In Pete's context, failure is only another tool to increase awareness and personal growth.

His self-exploration has resulted in the creation of 3 rules for success. I think they can be applied to our lives as well.

RULE 1: PROTECT THE TEAM--Life isn't about us. We are not the center of the world. This inoculates us from the selfishness that can corrode our relationships and anxiety that stems from misguided beliefs about control.

RULE 2: NO NEGATIVE TALK--No whining. Fostering "victim stories" weakens our resolve and effort. We become defeated and can shrink back from anything new or challenges before us.

RULE 3: BE EARLY--Anyone who tries to be "on-time" will usually end up on one end or the other of the moment they are shooting for. Being early, allows us to remain in control of our life and maintain our positioning in the moments we find ourselves in. This ensures that our lives remain an action, rather than a reaction.
