Pet Safety in the Summer: Keeping Your Furry Friends Safe and Happy
First Tennessee Human Resource Agency (FTHRA)
Improving the quality of life for the People of Northeast Tennessee
As the summer months bring warmer weather and longer days, it's important to remember that our pets need extra care to stay safe and comfortable. At FTHRA, we are committed to the well-being of both our clients and their pets through our Pet Pals program, a sub-program of Meals on Wheels of Northeast TN. Pet Pals provides essential pet food supplies to our clients, ensuring that their beloved animals are well-fed and cared for. Here are some tips and recommendations to help keep your pets safe and happy this summer.
Hydration is Key
Just like humans, pets need plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially in hot weather. Make sure your pets always have access to fresh, cool water. Consider adding ice cubes to their water bowl to keep it cooler for longer periods. If you're taking your pet on a walk or outing, bring a portable water bowl and a bottle of water for regular hydration breaks.
Avoid Hot Surfaces
Pavement and asphalt can become extremely hot in the summer sun, potentially burning your pet's paws. Test the surface with your hand before allowing your pet to walk on it. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws. Walk your dog during cooler times of the day, such as early morning or late evening, and stick to grassy areas whenever possible.
Never Leave Pets in a Parked Car
Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a parked car can rise rapidly and become deadly for pets. Never leave your pet alone in a car, even for a short period. If you need to run errands, leave your pet at home in a cool, comfortable environment.
Provide Shade and Ventilation
Ensure your pet has access to shaded areas and good ventilation when they are outside. This will help them stay cool and avoid overheating. You can also set up a small kiddie pool for your dog to splash in and cool off.
Watch for Signs of Overheating
Pets can overheat quickly in hot weather. Symptoms of overheating include excessive panting, drooling, weakness, and collapse. If you notice any of these signs, move your pet to a cooler area immediately, offer them water, and apply cool (not cold) water to their body. Seek veterinary attention if their condition does not improve.
Safe Play and Exercise
Exercise is important for your pet's health, but it's best to adjust their routine during the summer months. Avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours and opt for gentle play sessions in the early morning or late evening. Keep an eye on your pet's energy levels and provide plenty of breaks and water.?
Protect Against Parasites
Summer is prime time for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes, which can carry diseases harmful to pets. Make sure your pet is up to date on their flea and tick prevention treatments. Regularly check your pet for any signs of parasites and consult your veterinarian for the best prevention methods.
Grooming and Coat Care
Regular grooming helps keep your pet's coat healthy and free from mats, which can trap heat. However, avoid shaving your pet's coat completely, as their fur provides some protection against sunburn. Instead, opt for a trim and frequent brushing to remove excess fur and promote better air circulation.

Keep Your Pet Cool Indoors
If your home becomes too warm, consider using fans or air conditioning to keep your pets comfortable. You can also provide cooling mats or damp towels for them to lie on. Ensure they have a cool, quiet place to rest away from direct sunlight.

Our Pet Pals program is dedicated to ensuring that the pets of our Meals on Wheels clients receive the nutrition they need.
