Peru’s 2030 Multisector Road Safety Strategy includes iRAP for safer journeys

Peru’s Multisector Road Safety Strategy 2023-2030 includes iRAP for the enhanced management of infrastructure safety, including for urban, highway and school environments.

The Strategy of Peru’s Ministry of Transport and Communications includes to:

  • Enhance current infrastructure road safety evaluations that traditionally apply the Road Safety Manual with acceptable use of the iRAP international standard;
  • Systematically implement iRAP risk assessments in urban and highway environments;
  • Increase the percentage of technical teams in national hierarchies trained in and performing iRAP road safety evaluations on a continuous basis;
  • Achieve the target for 50% of travel on existing roads to be on the equivalent of 3-star or better for all road users by 2030, meeting the national safety standard adapted from iRAP; and
  • Build capacity in and increase the percentage of local governments that implement safe school environments aligned to the iRAP star rating.

By building local capacity, enhancing how infrastructure risk is systematically and continuously evaluated and addressed, and identifying road segments with a lower Star Rating, resources will be optimized on interventions to greatly improve safety and reduce the number of crashes, fatalities and serious injuries on Peru’s road network.

Partner-led iRAP activity has already assessed more than 4,500 km of roads and designs, and 7 schools in Peru, influencing the safety of US$862 million of road infrastructure investment. 151 people have benefited from iRAP global/on-line training, along with 43 people trained in events delivered locally.? Aleatica ’s AUNOR concession has been assessed and investment optimised to improve safety outcomes.

According to iRAP’s Safety Insights Explorer, achieving UN Target 4 for greater than 75% of travel on 3-star or better roads for all road users in the country by 2030 could save an estimated 1,433 lives a year, and 315,209 lives and serious injuries over the 20-year life of road treatments, with an economic benefit of USD$35.5 billion – $7.8 for every $1 spent.
