PERU, SOUTH AMERICA’S CUISINE & CULTURAL CAPITAL, ON TRACK FOR STRONG GROWTH OF HIGH END CHINESE TOURIST ARRIVALS

PROMPERú Increases China Tourism Engagement with Appointment of Leading B2B Marketing Agency Create Consulting

Beijing, 28 March 2018, Peru Export and Tourism Promotion Board PROMPERú has announced a new China market promotion initiative with tour operator sales and media relations agency Create Consulting. The appointment marks a new drive by the rapidly growing popular South American nation to win an increasing share of the high-end Chinese outbound tourism market.

South America’s most attractive tourist destination in terms of history, culture, natural beauty and excellent cuisine, it seems Peru has it all. Home to world-famous cultural attractions such as Machu Picchu and the larger-than-life Nazca Lines, the destination has risen to world tourism prominence in recent years.

The country is famous for its Inca strongholds in the Andes Mountains, the Spanish colonial-era architecture of cities such as Lima and source of the mighty Amazon River (the Peruvian Amazon occupies 60% of the country's area, one of the world's most biodiversity-rich areas. )

Diverse landscapes and unique surroundings have drawn some of the world’s most adventurous at heart, while cosmopolitan fusion cuisine and legendary museums have attracted many more. Only, recently in 2017, the World Travel Awards named Peru the world’s top culinary destination while also naming Machu Picchu the world’s leading tourist attraction.

Chinese tourists, known for their deep interest in ancient cultures and histories similar to their own, have seen a growing interest in what Peru has to offer. In 2017 Peru received over 31,000 Chinese tourists, an increases of 22% on total Chinese arrivals in 2016. Due to the rapidly growing positive perception of Peru amongst Chinese outbound tourists, this growth trend is expected to increase with momentum.

PROMPERú has expressed optimism about increased engagement with the China market. “At PROMPERú we take China very seriously and with time and hard work we believe China will eventually become our largest tourist source market in Asia as we are confident that Peru is highly suitable to the high-end Chinese tourist’s interests and preferences. With our unique and exotic Latin American culture, the stunning landscapes of our majestic Amazon rainforest –considered one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature–, the most exciting cuisine in the region, not to mention our historical highlights such as Machu Picchu, natural surrounding beauty and excellent hospitality infrastructure that will make Chinese guests comfortable, we are confident we have only started to see the beginning of a trend of Chinese visiting and enjoying Peru,” said Marisol Acosta, Director of PROMPERú Tourism.

Speaking from their Beijing head office, Create Consulting co-founder Eileen Zhang also expressed her confidence in Peru’s China market potential. “Due to the big distance separating China and South America it is understandable that the continent has not been so popular in China in the past, but now that the Chinese market has matured more there is no doubt that currently South America is becoming increasingly and rapidly popular in China. We are thrilled to work with PROMPERú as out of all the destinations in South America we believe Peru has the most complete offering to tourists that the Chinese market is going to love. They also have easier visa policies now in that Chinese travellers who have a valid USA, Canada, The UK, Australia or a Schengen Country visa require no visa for Peru. This measure will make it more convenient for Peru’s target audience to travel there,” she said.

Peru, like many other South American nations, is experiencing a renaissance as its economy flourishes and it returns to a heritage of prosperity. This truly multicultural nation, constituted of Inca descendants as well as the descendants of English, Chinese, Spanish, French, Japanese, Italian, African and German immigrants, has made it the colourful country it is today. With its rich tapestry of ancient culture and contemporary eclecticism, no wonder it’s known as “Peru, the land of hidden treasures”.
