Perth Airport Begins A$5 billion Expansion to Meet Growing Aviation Demands

Perth Airport has commenced a massive A$5 billion (US$6.4 billion) infrastructure development program aimed at accommodating the increasing demands of Western Australia’s aviation sector and its growing passenger traffic. This ambitious expansion includes the construction of two multi-story car parks, a new terminal, an expanded international terminal, the airport’s first-ever hotel, and the development of a new runway.

CEO's Vision for Seamless Integration

Jason Waters, CEO of Perth Airport, emphasized the importance of ensuring that all new infrastructure seamlessly integrates with existing airport operations. “Our goal is to ensure that future infrastructure connects smoothly with current airport operations. As construction ramps up, passengers will notice several projects in progress, particularly in and around the terminal areas,” Waters stated.

First Multi-Story Car Park Underway

One of the initial projects is the airport’s first multi-story car park. To facilitate construction, a significant portion of the T1 short-term parking lot has been closed. While the airport is striving to maintain sufficient parking spaces for passenger pick-up and drop-off, some travelers may find that available parking is a bit farther from the terminal than usual.

Waters advised passengers to allow extra time and carefully plan their journeys to avoid any inconvenience. He also highlighted the availability of the Airport Central Train Station, which provides direct access to Terminal 1 via a skybridge, as well as options for booking discounted long-term parking in advance.

Passenger Growth and Future Expansion

In the 2024 financial year, Perth Airport exceeded 16 million passengers for the first time, with over 156,000 aircraft movements. This growth trajectory is expected to continue in the coming years, prompting the need for significant infrastructure upgrades.

Waters noted, “This is a transformative period for Perth Airport, crucial for supporting Western Australia's tourism, resource, and export sectors. However, such extensive construction will inevitably cause some inconvenience for passengers.”

New Agreements and Future Plans

In addition to the infrastructure upgrades, Perth Airport recently signed a 12-year agreement with Qantas, resolving previous disputes and committing to a joint investment of approximately A$3 billion (US$2 billion) for a new terminal and parallel runway, marking a new chapter in the airport’s development.

These developments signal a significant transformation for Perth Airport, positioning it to meet future demands while enhancing the overall passenger experience.
