8 年Nice piece. @ Simon Haigh, This preoccupation with being "important" is curious. Important to whom? And why? As the title and content of this article finally acknowledges, albeit carefully delivered, Perth is a mining town. But it has many other things to offer, things that are unique to Perth. Shopping centres and new inlets in the river and various other flat-packed vanity projects to "Put Perth on the map", will not put Perth on the map. No one who comes from a city with a skyline like Hong Kong will be impressed by a bell tower. No one who normally shops in Paris will be impressed by a waterside cafe strip. If the city would only capitalise on it what it already has which is unique instead of obsessively seeking recognition through imitation, it would become important all by itself for nothing other than being itself. Develop the coastline (there is no shortage of it), celebrate and exploit the nearby ruggedness of the Darling Scarp, leave the imitation to Las Vegas and like the article says, plan ahead for the cycles we now should all be well used to.
