Perspectives on Treating Heel Spurs (Plantar Fasciitis)

?? Challenge: Heel spurs, also known as plantar fasciitis, affect millions of people globally and can significantly impact biomechanics of the foot and quality of life. The most typical symptoms are heel pain (particularly in the morning), pain in the arch of the foot and stiffness. It is hypothesized that numerous factors can contribute to the development of plantar fasciitis, including repetitive loading of the plantar fascia and overpronation.

?? Solution: But how can we treat the symptoms? Recent research highlights the effectiveness of custom orthotic insoles in the treatment of plantar fasciitis. Ribeiro and Jo?o (2022) found that custom-made insoles was effective to improve pain and functionality after using it for six months. In addition, another study (Fong et. al 2012) found that a combination of costume made insoles and shoes with rocker soles had an even greater immediate therapeutic effect and could be effective in the treatment of plantar fasciitis.

??? Implementation in Practice: We encourage physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals to share their insight into their treatment strategies. Have you experienced other effective treatment strategies?

?? Dialogue: We'd love to hear from you! How have custom orthotics and other therapy forms worked in your practice? Share your experiences and tips in the comments section below.
