Missouri Army National Guard (MOARNG) soldiers undergo intensive training in state-of-the-art facilities to conduct their critical missions. ?

Olsson was ready to help design MOARNG’s latest facility, an aviation-focused military readiness center that is one of only four similar installments nationwide.?

“We’re honored to help create the readiness center to support MOARNG’s commitment to our nation’s security and safety,” said Cory Wilson, Olsson’s project manager. “Our team used materials and principles that should ensure the center’s longevity for at least fifty years.”

Should Structural Engineers Reject Tech?

One bolt.

Is it needed?

An engineer decides. But is the engineer human or digital?

Let’s say a structural engineer specifies four, three-quarter-inch bolts to connect every beam and column joint in a new office high-rise. The specification provides redundancy, safety, and assurance. Plus, the engineer has always used four bolts. It’s accepted wisdom.

Until structural analysis software challenges the accepted wisdom.

The software concludes the joint will function safely with three bolts instead of four. Over the course of a 1,000-ton steel building project, the cost of fabricating, purchasing, and installing extra bolts constitutes real money for the client.

'Uniquely Qualified' Higher Education Expert Joins Olsson

Throughout a stellar career with the military and two Big Ten universities, T. Mark Miller, PE, has led multiple large operations responsible for billions of dollars in facilities infrastructure and assets.

Now Miller brings his professional experience to Olsson as a subject matter expert for the Facilities practice. He will assist higher education and institutional clients with solutions for facilities planning, design and construction/resource management.

Miller comes to Olsson from Penn State University, where he was senior assistant vice president for Facilities Management and Planning. Before Penn State, he held a similar role at the University of Nebraska. The retired lieutenant colonel with the U.S. Air Force also formerly served as chief of programs for Air Force Space Command.

Insights from an Olsson Intern: “It has opened my eyes”

As a field services intern, Olsson’s Mia Toigo enjoys the variety of her days. You can find her in the field gaining technical expertise, working on site maps and geotechnical reports, or – her personal favorite – building relationships and learning from her co-workers.?

Mia recently gave us a sneak peek into her day as an Olsson intern.

We’re glad Mia enjoyed a summer of new experiences and had plenty of fun along the way. When asked about her internship, she said “It has opened my eyes to different possibilities for my future.”?

We believe those possibilities are endless. An aspiring engineer, Mia enters her junior year this fall studying civil engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She’ll continue year two of her Olsson internship on the Field Services team.?
