Perspectives of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is a mainstream technology that is deployed everywhere. It is a life-changing tool that gives us a chance to overcome the biggest challenges of humanity, namely overpopulation, climate change, and others. However, on a par with the obvious advantages of the technology, considerable insecurities reduce the temptation to implement AI without thinking twice.
The most significant concerns are associated with the intrusion into personal life, fraud, an unpredictable outcome of poorly-formulated problems for AI, the emergence of a monopoly in this realm. For instance, some downsides have been already registered in China. Special sensors observe and indicate the activity of learners’ brains in Chinese primary schools. Then the teachers conclude about children’s attention, memory, engagement, concentration and inform their parents. Even though scientists warn about the likelihood to leap to the wrong conclusion, the teachers claim that the whole procedure makes students more disciplined and, therefore, it is beneficial for the learning process (the photo above). Similar and other perils oblige researchers to put under question AI application.
On the other hand, tremendous advances in healthcare, particularly in diagnosis, and other thrilling rewards of AI encourage the developers to struggle with negative anticipation for the sake of a better future. They believe that AI, if it is used in a wise way, is capable to dramatically change the whole humankind. Detecting hypothetical risks and recasting pessimistic expectations into practical solutions is as important as technical progress itself. Yet, any jeopardy should be recognized before the global community would confront terrible repercussions.
Overall, we cannot allow ourselves to neglect the harm. Otherwise, the price would be enormous. We have already set a precedent with a nuclear weapon and its unethical usage. We should truly cultivate the most thoughtful approach in case we do not want AI to be a powerful instrument that will fall into the wrong hands. Capability to convert AI from a riddle wrapped in an enigma into evident strategies will be an indicator of our potential to survive on the planet.
